Use avg free but am thinking of investing some dough to get a super av.

Any recommendations? Norton seems to slow everything down. What to peeps use? Which is the best for protecting email, social media and poker sites?

The end user is the biggest weakness/the most important part of protection.

If you do online banking then you may well find your bank provides respected AV software for free.

End user I guess u mean me.

I have racked my brains to try and think of any sites I may have gone on to have this happen. Cannot think of any apart from the stick man site!

No need to pay for any AV software - just don't randomly click odd links on Facebook etc/don't use Internet Explorer.

Let's be careful out there people.

Kids will be attracted to click on exactly the sort of flashing banners/attention grabbing links that bad internet people use.

Separate login for kids with no admin access?

Yeah sorry George that wasn't me dissing you innit, just saying that the best defense is the end user.

Regular computer sweeps, AV software, being aware of hacking issues and not using IE are really basic but important ways of staying safe on t'interwebs.

There are always new attack methods and platforms and as such it's very hard to be au fait with everything, just being cynical and careful should be enough (also accept that if you are someone like Trickett recently I think, who has lots of da maneys floating about and lots of information out there about them they can be easy targets. If adept people want to hack you; without being an expert yourself, you're going to struggle to stop anything specifically aimed at you). There's recently been some stuff going round spread through FB chat, messages you think are from your friends are sent via FB chat and are obviously actually from the scamtards directing you to a link (very similar) but not quite a FB link that infects you and tries to get you to spread it without knowing.  You should always check URLs before you click on them, and if you are unsure just don't bother.

£30... http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/kaspersky_anti-virus

There is only me that uses my pc and laptop. Sarah uses our her iPad so I don't actually use one myself as I don't click anything that looks remotely wrong. However, a retailer I do some work for swears by Kaspersky.

My advice would be to avoid anything that comes bundled with Internet Security applications. Just go for a pure virus checker as most do sell the virus checker alone but will try and sell you a 'suite' of security applications. IMO Windows Firewall does a wonderful job and you'll find that any 3rd party firewall will just stick it's nose in and tilt the life out of you!

HTH!

Notes: As titaniumbean quite rightly points out, if someone seriously wants to malitiously get to your machine, without the knowledge to spot the signs, you'll struggle to do much about it with todays technology. Always check links before you click them. Don't click anything that your not sure about and NEVER allow an application to install if you don't know what it is. Most backdoor trojan type hacks have to be installed on your pc to allow access to the hacker.

Also as a pretty tilting aside, when people try to send you links to stuff or when you are being 'directed' somewhere try google searching the url/link information before you access the site directly to see if anything gets flagged up.

Nowadays (i'm old I realise now....) there are so many 'social media' interactions where people need to be concise and shorten shit that it's actually really hard to protect yourself.

For example, this is a link to a totally hot womans blog who gets her baps out and everything yeah...

http://tiny.cc/ir4w9

oh wait no it doesn't, but you've now gone to ANY url I want you to without being able to check it. EXPERT skills. Note if you hover over the link rather than the actual url being visible you just see the shortened one. If I was George from Nigeria that could link you to bad stuffs.

Also beware that with facebook trying to take over our lives they are also trying to embed itself into the internet as a whole, so you go to some random site and it already says 'hey mr xyz want to like this so your friends see it and FB can monetise you' type crap and you'll see that if you're logged into FB In another tab/have been in that session and haven't logged out your essentially logged into FB through that page, there is a large amount of data just given away potentially to really dodgy sites.

I am probably worse than you George. I paid twice as much for a laptop than I should of from a guy on my street just so I can keep telling to nip over and check it out for me.
He installed "kaspersky pure" on mine and it's a doddle and I never had any problems and I am always clicking on stuff that is naughty.
