Whats the point in this outdated method of payment?

It ircs me that its nearly 2012 and still companies are using this form of outdated banking, I have been waiting on a payment for a few weeks and thought as the company involved were a pretty big organisation that a BACS transfer could be done despite me chasing the payment on previous occasions the cheque could not be cancelled and done via BACS.

After numerous phone calls I have eventually received a cheque in this mornings post, and what I had hoped would add a little extra to the Christmas fund is now going to sit in my bank account until January.

I could have put this in the "things that piss you off thread" but its just really annoyed me and I feel a wee bit better for my rant!

We take quite a few cheques at work still.  Have nothing against them, money is money.  Lots of clubs and societies still prefer to issue cheques rather than pay by BACS although I can't see why business still send them out.

I've just received a cheque from an American company for $17.33.

Dont suppose it'll be worth much after charges!

it would break my heart to go to one of these cowboys bud.

They leach on the poor and the desperate.

I am okay for funds, but it would have been nice to be able to splash out on the family a little more, I have been chasing this payment since September and I suppose when so many companies are in a mess I am lucky just to have got the cheque the real sweat starts now.

Its due to clear on the 5th of January due to holidays.

It might not necessarily be the case in this particular circumstance - but these two can be related.

I used to work for a company that had to send out dozens of payments every week to different people - because of the quantity and because it was rarely repeated payments to the same people it was significantly quicker and easier to merge their names to a file to a cheque printer than it would have been to set up any kind of electronic payment to them.
