i use my iphone for pics, nothing special. But i am looking for tips or tricks maybe a book to help take better ones, any suggestions?

Phone cameras are great because you always have them with you.

Loads of little guides on the web.

For a bit more comprehensive advice, google something like 'Beginners guide to point and shoot photography'. The principles are the same for all cameras anyway.

There are some good pics in this thread taken on camera phones - but the biggest improvement you could make would be to use a better camera (imo).  The lens and sensor on camera phones is small, and therefore limited.  Even a relatively cheap compact camera will help you get significantly better pictures.

Thought you guys might like this, some great pics:

Personally I like the rugby one and the Libyan rebel one.

I love the Libyan Rebel one.

re: the comment before about modern cameras doing a lot of the hard work automatically, they definitely do, especially for exposure. However I don't think they can create great shots on their own, photography is an art in that respect. I take tons of landscape shots with my dslr, some of them look pretty but none have really taken my breath away. I have a friend who is self-trained and has put a lot of effort in, all of her shots have that extra 'something' about them, always beautifully framed and provoking.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me i didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life.

This.

I'm coming round to Reds way of thinking too, whilst the camera is indeed in my case the master, I have sought for what I consider the right place to take the pic from. It's meant getting the feet wet for some of the waterfall/weir ones and having to basically camp out from pre-dawn in order to catch the Buzzard. That wee bit extra effort makes it more worthwhile when you do get that one really good shot

I've read about simple techniques, like using the trees to 'frame' a shot and they do make it look better.

Nicely framed.  You need to get rid of that white stuff though, it's ruining the photo.

First crack at being artistic. Tried adjusting lighting, thought black and white would make it look better but it didn't really work.

Cheers Woodsey fella.

You seem a bit of a pro with all this stuff, often when i drive to work the sun is rising and looks class behind a telephone pylon. I always think to myself that would be a great pic to take and possibly get made into a pic. You got any tips of taking pics of the sun? Only have a standard compact camera (12meg). I'm sure i remember something like making a hole in a piece of card as a kid. But could just be making that up.

Thanks to ManuelsMum I am happily creating film clips of my pics. This is one from my collection from Jack and I on the C2C last year.

Most of these were taken on my phone and whilst at the time I thought they weren't bad, I now appreciate the need to spend a wee bit more on a decent camera.
