decent as in a really nice place - or an OK place to stay to get your head down (ie clean and tidy)?

A nice place to stay really, one that is quiet. I have looked online and found quite a few hotels that looked ok but when I read the reviews some seemed to be in the red light district and very noisy, others were based near the airport. Do you know how far that is to the city centre and what the transport is like?

Until 2006 I had to go once a quarter for work

I was put up at http://www.venere.com/swiss-quality-hotels/geneva/hotel-sagitta/

walking distance from the old town and the lake and very quiet

No idea about cost or availability

Geneva? That's a bit unconventional.

Do you remember how much in a taxi from the airport to that part of town?

The old town is the part of Geneva furthest away from the airport. Rough memory is 30-35 Euros, as of a few years ago

You definitely want the old town, climbing up the hill away from the lake. Attractive, quiet, nice shops etc

The newer side with the train station is more commercial, office blocks, modern, bustling etc...to be avoided as a base venue
