only trains i can see from inverness to newark have a change at edniburgh so including the train from elgin thats 3 changes total

Yep, you are correct.......looks like there are 2 direct from Inverness/London, but the nearest stopping point is York FFS. Will be suprised if this has always been the case. I can recall being at Newark and seeing on the boards a train going up to Inverness....oh well never mind!
