Too much poker talk?

This thread might be seen as ironic, but just wondering about people's views.

When sat at poker table there is always going to be the odd time you're going to hear stories about what happened to people in certain hands, etc. But some people are just obsessed with telling you stories about them. I went upto one person a couple of weeks and asked him how he was and I got a reply of "Mate, just had A10, flop came 10 high blah blah and blah". I didn't want to hear HH's, just asking how he was! There are lots of people who do this and of course I'm sure people on here will be exactly the same.

Another example are the breaks within tournaments @ DTD. I can admit here that I have been one to tell a story, but I always stick to one. But there are some people who give you 3 or 4 in the 30 minute breaks! There is one particular guy who thinks every story he gives is interesting, it isn't. "He 2 bet, I 3 bet, he 4 bet, I 5 bet, he 6 bet, I 7 bet, he 8 bet" this looking like an interesting/bad beat story... I reply "wow, what happened" and he replies with "I passed" ffs!

Like said, I don't mind the odd story, but I just like to play the game, not listen to a HH every 5 minutes. In fact I started this topic on another forum and they agreed, I actually like to hear what people have been upto rather than HH's. Or indeed slag people off and listen to the gossip of the players who are regs, but actually are not here.

Views on poker talk/chat? etc.

Not enough people do a Mosley and a smooze/chat up the fish, it's a huge skill in itself, similarly with some of the more rough, aggro fish you've got to rile them up a little bit.

Regarding hand histories I'm pretty bad for this and should probably tone it down a little bit. I actually really like being by myself on breaks, think its a lot more relaxing and I do t like smoke or most people on casinos and would prefer to ring friends/family and catch up.

It can be very grating in certain circumstances, but as Pleno inferred being pleasent to recreational players is +ev in poker and life imo. What I would do though is be very wishwashy regarding giving away strat and your approach to poker.

Sometimes a player will voluntarily bascially tell you exactly how they play, how good is that!

If someone actually knows what they are on about and wants to talk about an interesting hand or ask my opinion on how they played a hand then that's fine. But if it's someone giving you a highlight reel, bad beats or tez hand analysis thats when it is painful.

I have been told in a nightmare to grind online with as I pretty much give a running commentary on every table im playing. Live though I would rather talk about the footy or perv On the valets. It's a 'break' afterall.

With strangers talking poker is an opening gambit. It is, after all, a guaranteed common interest. If we met in a bus queue in the rain we'd talk, if we talked at al, about the weather or the fact that the bus is late...

With true friends we can talk about whatever we choose whenever we choose. But when we're at a poker tournament it's likely that we'll want to share our recent experiences. In the same way that if we'd gone karting/paint balling/rock climbing then we'd share our thoughts on that before we discussed football or work or plans for next weekend wouldn't we?

And if I can't unburden myself of the angst of a bad beat with a mate the what better than a total stranger?

This isn't really the "Moseley" Andy's pretty much just himself when he plays and cos he's a really nice guy and genuinely respects everyone at his table so they all enjoy playing with him.

My mates are pretty bad for this, I could happily go through a break without talking any poker, there's rarely hands that actually qualify as interesting or funny and when I'm on a break I don't like to listen to a whole bunch of hand histories.

Yeah it is a bit boring and I avoid if possible, the problem is poker is the reason we all know each and what we have in common so a bit of polite chit chat about poker is inevitable I guess.

What I hate is the poker bores who want to dissect every flipping hand after its played and how well/badly you played it. If someone played a hand badly why on earth would you tell them so they play it better the next time?

Yeah very much this. Never heard Tom moan  about a bad beat.  Having said that 2 weeks ago someone was moaning that Tom snapped him off with either 66 or 88 to end his tourney lol

Depends who I run into. I will talk poker with some people but not with others. I prefer to stick to other topics tbh. Breaks are called breaks so you can have a break. Some people are so bad with bad beat stories and will literally offer nothing else that it's worth crossing the room to avoid or pretend to be on the phone.
