Undoubtedly a character, but he'll forever be tarnished by the child abuse scandal.

If you can look beyond that, his biography "Slim, In a World Full of Fat People" is an entertaining read.

This. His book is brilliant, really really funny. It really leaves an awkward taste in the mouth to be so thoroughly entertained by his antics as a road gambler, yet so disgusted at the allegations against him.

The table tennis prop bets were priceless.

Interview with Nolan Dalla

Personally I'd like to see a bit more evidence before ever remembering the guy as a child abuser.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me i didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life.

Somebody gave me a copy of this book. I didn't realise he was accused of child abuse. I won't read it now, in actual fact, I've just chucked in the bin.

You might want to rephrase that.

I hate child abuse too, but I also hate trail by media and mob rule. It's so easy to get yourself accused of something you didn't do.

I herd about some women in Salem that were accused of being witches. They all hanged, but I think there's a good chance that some of them were innocent.

Some (apparently) reasonably balanced facts about the Amarillo allegations are on his Wiki page, here......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amarillo_Slim

As a quirky aside, I seem to recall that Camel bumped into Mr Slim shortly after the allegations surfaced, in an elevator in Las Vegas, & was stumped for words, he did not know what to say.

If YOU encountered him in such a situation, (whilst he was alive), what would YOU have said, or done? None of us know the true facts, of course. And face to face is very different to the internet.

Are the facts your referring to just those in the one small paragraph Tone?

I start conversations with strangers all the time, but with famous people it must happen so often that they are sick of it.

So I probably wouldn't have spoken to him in the lift unless he spoke to me first. I which case I would have answered back politely. From that point on, I would have been happy let the conversation develop naturally.

I should point out that had it been Hitler, or Mother Teresa, I would still talk to them if I could. Why waste such a golden opportunity?

Yes Tom, not much detail there, but it seems to be reasonably facts based. There is a ton of stuff all over the internet about it, but it's mostly "internet style" nonsense from the brave but faceless ones, rather than factually based.

I just find it fascinating, how our perceptions of individuals change, & how we would handle it if we encountered them in real life.

You probably know that I get all manner of hate mail & malicious lurkers, but face to face, almost everyone is always very civil. If I encountered them in a lift, I think they'd just comment nicely upon my fine physique & youthful looks. The internet makes people braver, I guess. Which is both good & bad I suppose.
