There appears to be a problem with the micro SD card in my phone.
The phone works fine without it, but when I put it back in it crashes all the time.
I can't format it in the phone because when I access the card the phone crashes.
I can access the card from my lappy via a card-reader, but I can't format it because it says it's write-protected.
How do I un write protect it please?

Put it in the SD adapter and slide the little switch.

OK. Found switch that locks/ unlocks card. (Has to be set somewhere in-between to work).
I've deleted everything except one folder named 'Android'. It says it can't delete that because the 'cache is not empty'.
?
I've opened folder and found the 'cache' file. It appears to go away when I delete it, but when I then try to delete the folder, it's back again.

Move contents of folder, if can't move just format the whole card and create a new folder called Android.

Can't move contents. How do I format, and why do I need to make a new folder? Tia.

This might be non-advice, but sometimes these cards go bad. My housemate had a bad card in his android phone, and he kept taking photos which would appear as if they were on the memory card, then disappear a few hours later. The fix was to get another card. If you are getting weird behaviour, it might just be better to get another one from eBay.

I suspect you could be right. I've had problems with photo's disappearing too. I would like to format this one and try it though.

Go into my computer, right click on the card, format, tick quick format, should be job done.
EDIT:
I imagine you would need to create a new Android folder if you wanted to put it back in your phone.

Was just wondering what 'class' it is - as this determines the transfer speed, which is critical when being used in a mobile phone. You want at least class 6, if not higher.
As has been said, SD cards can go bad. Fortunately, the price is always coming down and you can get fast cards with 16 or 32GB of memory now for not a lot.
