Playing in a 36 man live tourney.  24k starting stack for most.  20k for others dependant on entry time. 20 min blinds.

I am 35, recreational casino player, play 2 or 3 times a month live.

Villain is early twenties solid player.  Not seen him make any mistakes although every hand is a major decision for him.

Early in tourney I flop a set against his top pair and he pays me off.  He gets moved but we meet again when down to 2 tables.

A few hands before this hand I double up after 4 betting all in with Aces and getting called by Kings.  I havent played many if any other hands in the previous hour or so.

He has won a few pots showing down good hands, and won a few without showdown.

Blinds are now 1k/2k 18 players left.  I have around 40k he has around 70k.

He raises to 6k from the hijack.

I call in the BB with

No other callers Pot is now 13k

Flop comes

I bet 6k

He raises to 15k

Me?

My thoughts are this, I dont normally play this hand to fold when I hit my ace and have a decent kicker.  Tonight the standard of player has been better than my local casino with fewer players.

By my image he knows the minimum I have here is a good ace.

I also think if I call or raise I am becoming committed to a hand that could be miles behind.

Eek this isnt good!

Are there antes?

If there are antes its a shove pre, even without, its probs still a shove

When you hit the flop, why are you leading into the raiser? what do you hope to achieve?

Ideally you should just check to him and then raise all in when he bets

As for now, get em in - its cold if you are beat

Are there any antes?

Regardless, you have 20 big blinds. When I have 20 big blinds, I am either a) folding or b) raising when there has not been a raise yet or c) moving all in over the top of someone who has raised.

So in your case I'd jut shove pre. AQs is a great hand.

If you do call pre (which you shouldn't), there is no way to fold top pair. However, you should absolutely check to the raiser, rather than leading at the pot. You've got a hand which is almost certainly best., and he is very likely to bet if you don't, which gets more chips in the pot.

I'm guessing that this thread is here because he's got AT, or A8, or T8, or AK, or a flush draw that got there. This is just too bad.

Edit: yes I know that this just says what the above post says, but I'd typed it out and I'm damned if I'm not just going to press "Post". :-)

I folded.  But cursed myself for not shoving or continuing in the hand.  Just felt I was behind.

He just muttered.good fold, good fold as usual.

I raised because I wanted to let him know I had a hand and was prepared to continue.  Then folded ffs.

Next time I check raise on the flop.

Thanks,

If the guy is opening to 6k he's not good

Definitely jam pre, theres at least 9k in there which increases your stack by a chunk if he folds and we have good equity vs a calling range.

As played you should have just check jammed the flop but I think you still have to get it in now. I think he can easily decide that you're betting to find out where you are and put in a raise expecting folds a lot. Definitely can't fold now.
