the following file on my computer has been infected with a trojan:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\4.1.10111.0\System.Runtime.Serialization.dll"

what is this?  is it safe to just delete it?

I'd just completely uninstall silverlight.

It doesn't do anything that adobe flash can't do so you don't need it anyway.

Just google Silverlight Claire. It tells you all about it on Wiki.

Basically a microsoft thing that they somehow manage to secretly install on your behalf during an update or something.

I've got it on my PC but I know 100% that I never asked for it and that my PC worked perfectly well without it.

Annoying f**kers!!

Certain websites need it, Ryanair Route Map being the most obvious one that you have probably both used.

I need Silverlight to do a lot of my day to day work. It is pretty essential for some online based software on a PC. Also some webpages are set up to use Silverlight and it will prompt you to download it to be able to view/run things properly.

But like Matt said you will probably know if you need it then just uninstall it and do a virus scan.

Yup. Forgot about them.

Still safe to uninstall though to get rid of the virus.

If she ever goes to a site that needs it she'll just get a link to d/l it for free again anyway.

Do it Claire!! You know it makes sense.

I've done it!

It's only been on my computer for a few months apparently, so I obviously managed fine without it before.
