Referring to a savoury bread a la bacon roll/cob, which is the right word?

Depends where you are. If you're in Nottingham you'd ask for a cob, in Scotland possibly a bap, in Manchester you might ask for a barm cake. None are wrong, but when you ask for a bread roll you need to pick the right term for the person you're speaking to.

A buttie to me would imply bread rather than a roll.  Perhaps bap for bacon but generally Claire has it right imo
