Hi All,
wouldnt mind thoughts on this hand from live tourney.
i have been trying to vary play/try different things etc and tbh having mixed results and results in tournies seems to be a bit wayward. normally i play fairly straight forward prob boring poker lol but had steady but no outstanding results, anyway on to the hand.
£50 tourney  10k start stack
30 min levels and lots of them slow structure.
250/500 and near end of level i am utg.
ace 8 spades and go all in for 8100.
is this ok?
thanks in advance for flaming/ replies  Wink Smiley

i feel we need more info...

antes, players.

stacks to your left... if you pass through the blinds without a hand youre going to have position on most of the table for a few hands so squeezing spots should be better than an a8 utg shove.

depends on your image aswell

thanks for quick replies guys.
my old 'default' play with this hand would be a easy fold, but as say am trying a few things.
reasoning with push was the blinds are about to go through me another 10% of stack gone(blinds would go up before both blind hnads played) then im down to 7k and 300/600 level so now 11bbs .........

your reasoning is good. you need to make a move and theres a chunk in the middle.

id wait until the next hand and judge it then.

in live play with longer levels. and slow dealing theirs no need to panic with these stacks i dont mind not shipping this hand with 10BBs in some comps im not saying its mathmatically correct in the long term but take each comp as it comes. Often at low levels you will find better spots than to shove a large amount of BB. Pick on players who fold their BB easy pick on players that will peel the bb then fold to a cbet. etc

No need to panic in live play. Online is a different kettle of fish and i think these days people are trying to play the two games two similar!

Live tournaments without antes you can feasibly blind down to as low as 5-7bb's without doing anything majorly drastic like the above play. People call shoves waaaaaay too tight in small buyin live tourneys and 5bb is usually enough to make them fold everything but top 8%

No you can't/ shouldn't imo. I mean, im not advocating that the example above is a shove, but yr advice of it being fine to fold down to 5bbs is surely dangerous/too laid back no when you should be looking for good spots to hoover up the blinds (and antes if they come in to play)?

His post is probably an exaggeration buts its true that in low stakes live tournaments you have way more fold equity with 5bb stacks than you should, for the most part people are not calling anywhere near correctly

Think you have too many BB's to be shoving A8s UTG, when you get to around 10 BB's you dont really have much of a choice but with 18 i think its a bit early to be shoving these kinds of hands

Ney way jose

bit of an overbet for starters, also A8sooted is a horrible hand to shove early position

I think it's better to fold this, let the blinds go through you (unless you find a hand) and open shove Unopened pots with reckless abandon in late position with a wider range.
