How can we possibly have this go to court?

I have just read that his maximum penalty is a £2,500 fine. For this we get 5 days in court? 5 days!!?!!?!?!?! How is that in the public interest? We pay to see this public circus, an for what, and pocket change fine? Is this some kind of joke?

The punitive (knock on) repercussions should be irrelevant in a decision as to whether this goes to trial. What public benefit is there in either outcome?

If convicted i think the FA can fine a lit more + obviously ban him for a period of time. Disagree with it not being in the public's interest. Pretty sure unless Terry is the most misunderstood person in the world, he deserves some fairly hefty punishment.

The CPS shouldn't be making decisions on what the Fa might do

Pretty sure Terry opted for jury trial, normally dealt with in Magistrates Court. CPS had no say in that?

I think it will be the FA that decide what to do based on what the CPS do

This isn't some chavvy scroat throwing out mindless abuse in between bites of his kebab at 3am outside Cindy's nightclub. It's the former England football captain, the captain of the European Champions. The CPS, when deciding on public interest, will factor in the individual's public image - if they have one. Sometimes it's the conviction above the punishment.

If found guilty - not that this will be relevant to the CPS - JT will likely face a ban and his sponsorship packages will be looked at (is terry as marketable a brand, post racism conviction?).

Harry was hauled before the courts on what was at best sketchy evidence (whether he has done it doesn't matter; the defence tore the prosecution case to bits). Our criminal justice system is pretty good at making sure justice is both done and seen to be done.

Above all, it's John Terry and my feelings on him are far from pleasant. He has been a fine footballer but this won't be the last time he's in trouble.

If he is found guilty, he won't even get the Suarez wiggle room of "it's a cultural thing" and I hope people on the terraces and in the papers (and in the changing rooms) let him know how they feel.

Interesting logic...if you can afford to pay the fine and expensive lawyers to argue your case in court you think the CPS should not bother?

I actually think a high profile case like this will do a lot to encourage less prominent victims challenge racism.

If Terry is found guilty he will have to pay costs.

Cheers for that. Excellent tweeter that chap.

I feel it should of been dealt with by FA. This can only be not guilty in court. Total waste of everyone's time and when a not guilty verdict arrives it sends an unwanted message to all. Young players now being told its fine to call players c***s during a match but if he gets not guilty for uttering black c*** then it's game over for junior soccer referees.

I have witnessed some awful behaviour from parents at kids matches. They have little intellect and will see this as a green light to shout even more dross at their doting offspring.

This is not a Crown court trial with a jury, it's a Magistrates.
