Another double rounder post, I'm afraid.

Round four of Zurich saw some fabulous chess:

The Aronian and Carlsen wins were especially good but all three are worth your time.

Any idea who the fellow on the right is? Clue: a singer (not Miley Cyrus)

Bump, who is the singer?

You were obv counting too quick!!!!

That was one of the prime sources of dispute. You'd normally say "Stalling one and a two and a three and..."  but it would get quite quick as the game progressed Cheesy

The junior chess equivalent of Chinese poker, for sure.

it's good to see enjoyment/piss taking going on rather than such solemn old man chessy stuff.

There's a game - well, there was at least when I was of the age -juniors play at tournaments for a bit of fun between games called Exchange

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bughouse_chess

We never used to play with clocks. We would say "stalling one, two, three, four..." and, if we got to ten, we would take the lowest ranked piece (Obv usually a pawn) off our opponent.

Hilariously chaotic and often led to hugely raised voices that annoyed everyone within fifty paces.

I sound posh.

In Scotland we used to fight and wrestle inbetween games. That must sound terribly uncivilised to you.

I'm the product of state schools in Birmingham, so no!

I'm talking about the junior circuit rather than the schools circuit, tbf. Obviously, if there was a football available (and somewhere to kick it), that took priority, but exchange was the game if there were four or more of you and it was raining.

Chap top right is Lev Aronian. This gives you an idea of how mad it is.

This one might be more instructive as you can at least see the boards:

At one point, the black king nearest us is in trouble and white is putting pieces on the board to try to get a mate. Black is putting defensive pieces on to hold him off. The white player tells his partner "All trades are good!", being American, which means "keep swapping things off on your board because I'm just a few bits from winning this game".

I've been getting back into chess recently, playing 5 minute blitz games on FICS. I decided I was going to post a few games ITT, and then right away I got a nice fun one.

I screwed up the opening, then blundered and lost a piece - which meant I was now a piece and a couple pawns down. No worries... it is blitz chess, anything can happen. I tried to get some sort of attack going, and my opponent got a bit lost, allowing me to get back in the game. Then he made a huge blunder. Can you spot the winning move for me, as Black to play? This one is aimed at the enthusiastic chess weakies like me, not at Tal and McGlashan and anyone else really strong cos it is too simple for them.

Thanks for this, HB, and welcome aboard, David!

HB playing like Frank Marshall. That's what we like to see. He got the exclamation marks for his move. Three!
