There's a mouse loose about my house.

He's living behind/under the kitchen furnishings (fridge, washing machine, etc).

I've personally seen him only once. He popped his head out from under the dishwasher, said cooee and then went back in.

I've tried the humane traps near the skirting boards, but he never goes in them. I think he's set it off from the outside maybe once or twice.

After a few days, I bought a couple of non-humane traps. One was set off the second night, but with no mouse attached.

I've tried nutella, peanut butter, and cheese.

I've avoided poison because I wouldn't know if he was actually dead or not, and also glue seemed a little too cruel.

Any tips? I've been sharing with Mickey for almost a week now, and don't want him to invite his friends.

Put a little bit of chocolate in the trap, they love it but you should also be aware.

Mice don't come in ones....

Ralph is correct. Mice usually get into folded clothes, you should check all clothes before putting them on.

Oh, & food, they get in the fridge, & in loaves of bread. Best check before eating or dressing.

And they get in beds, too, & pyjamas.

They bite as well, not serious, but they have something in their saliva which gets into your bloodstream, & you will come out in blotches.

I bet there will be a dozen or more.

Doesn't Nutella cover that, or do I need to bring out the Ferrero Rochers?

Yep, that's why I'm a bit antsy. I put five traps out every night - you'd think I'd catch something.

We've just caught one at ours. Had the cheese out of a pair of matching humane traps two nights on the spin. Borrowed a different trap from the neighbour (oblong in constructions with a flap that drops when triggered rather than one that operates on a 'rocker' type system) and caught him the next evening.

Since then we've popped poison down the back of the oven and at the back of the under-the-sink cupboard lest any others get the idea of popping in for a visit.

This is what I tried before turning to less humane options:

Didn't work.

With the poison, how do you know if it's worked or not (I've only ever seen my dude once), and also, isn't it bad to have rotting corpses where you can't see/find them?

I have a dog which makes the poison tricky too.

Small pieces of Kit Kat work well in traps.

Not sure. Presumably wait for the smell.

Not at all overjoyed with this as an option but figure it's marginally preferable to permitting them to breed if there are any more of the blighters.

Put your trap close to a dark wall, (parallel) preferably behind or under some furniture.

Be concious of your scent, wear gloves when handling the trap.

Use chocolate as bait and drop a few tiny shavings along the wall a foot or so away from the trap.

Thanks Red-Dog. Just read about the scent. Should I just wash the traps and start again?
Also, is there any chance that if you put bait away from the trap, that they'll just take that and leave?

Years ago i used to go match fishing and I used to detest mice in my garages and sheds. They caused so many problems eating and destroying everything and I never really kept on top of the problem. Then one day I went in the garage and saw the biggest rat in all my life sat watching me. This rat was an absolute beast and it stayed for at least 3 years but I never had any problems with mice in all that time.  I thought that it was a loner/rogue if this is possible as I never saw another one. My mates used to laugh at me when I said I never had mice because the rat kept em away .

The best way to remove the scent from the traps is to leave them out in the sun (If we ever get any) for a few hours.

Drop a few tiny slivers of chocolate away from the trap, it's like eating one Malteaser, you just can't do it. He'll be desperate to find more.
