OK just back from Newcastle, where I had a great time - found the Geordies to be great fun and really welcoming. But a small incident at the end has kind of tarnished things.
I booked my hotel a couple of months ago and, being tight as a gnats chuff, booked myself a little single room. The cost came to £168 for 4 nights - check in Thurs check out Mon morning.
Got there and paid for first night (£42).
Got a phone call from the ex, asking me if I could come back down south to look after the nippers as she didn't want them to undertake a car journey to Sheffield for an appointment she had. I'd busted the side event in mid afternoon, so decided to oblige.
Went back to the hotel and said to the landlady 'I'm probably going to check out today, just need to go make a phone call...'
Went and spoke to a mate about some personal issues with the ex; then went back to the landlady.
She wanted me to settle the bill. 'Fine' I said 'but I may be about to have an argument with my ex - and if thats the case I will actually need to stay the night'
'Well I've put the room back on the website as you said you were checking out'
'No I said I MAY check out. I'm happy that I have to pay the bill in full but if I need it, I would have to sleep in that room'
'Well you said you were checking out...'
'I'm sorry, but I didn't and if I'm paying for something I expect to be able to use it. If I don't need it then fine, you have an empty room paid for...but give me 5 minutes with the ex and I'll know...'
She was rather cross about the whole thing and produced the bill - stating that I needed to pay £168 (on top of the £42 already paid!). I corrected her (allowing this to be a simple clerical error) and a new sum of £126 was reached.
I was about to pay when she says 'oh and my husband may want to charge you £36 for the ladyfriend you had stay the other night' (not a brag) - but he's away at the moment'
I then went on to say that she'd not had an extra bed and it was ridiculous that she wanted to charge so much for an extra staying in a single (lol) bed. She tells me that I hadn't had the courtesy to ask if she could stay blah blah. I pointed out that theres nothing in the T & C's on the booking site about extra guests - and certainly no schedule of charges (she pulled the figure of £36 as the difference to a double).
She waffled a load of blather about H & S/head counts etc (which I understand, but would point out the fire evacuation plan was not clearly marked in rooms, no briefings given etc so guess she is clutching at straws)
She says that her husband will probably 'take the payment anyway' - to which I told her I was unhappy as I have to authorise debit from my card....yet she insists they can just take the payment. I left and told her that her husband needs to phone me if he wishes to try any such thing...
NB. nowhere on the booking site or in room packs (non existent) are extra guests/curfews etc mentioned.
So:
a. Am I right out of order?
b. Are they allowed to just take payment (no deposit/details type payment like u give at chains was given)

Yea it seems they can charge ur card as they see fit. My card got post charged for damage someone in my group caused as the actual culprit paid cash at the time. Fucking joke. I rang up but they seemed to think they were well within their rights. Wasn't getting a train back upto Scotland to argue about it.

I would say it is possible for them to charge you to bring back a 'friend' for sure, at the end of the day it is a SINGLE room.
As for all other stuff, think they was out of order for that.
I ad a similar issue with a crappy hotel in Manchester, but I just can't remember the details!

Still no phone call and nothing as yet on my bank statement.
Need to speak to the bank and get their view on any unauthorised payments. Furthermore I don't usually do hotel reviews, but I will be putting some effort into one for this hotel on booking.com and tripadvisor...
I would also like to clarify that it was 'a ladyfriend' (her words not mine) not a 'ladyboyfriend' in case some confusion mounts later on...
I hope any confusion was cleared up prior to any mounting took place

I can confirm that at no stage has it deviated from its brag post status.
