Many cicada have life-cycles that work around prime numbers (different prime numbers for different populations or species of cicada). It's hypothesised that they've evolved these cycles around prime numbers so that predatory species can't make the cicada their "prime" prey, so it acts as a defensive mechanism to ensure they can reproduce and perpetuate as a species.

This is true but only for a small number of species (which I learned to great disappointment!). I think it is just the magicicada

It is not a locust. Completely different order. Cicadas are hemiptera whereas locusts are orthoptera.

Farce!

I think there are beetles that follow the prime number life-cycle as well. Will have to do a search for something to back up my failing memory...

I always felt that was one of nature's greatest "wow" facts that Cicada only appeared every 17 years. Then, some months ago, Tal broke my heart when he Posted that it was not exclusively confined to a 17 year cycle.

Damn spoilsport.

Boo!

It's even better that different populations have evolved to follow life-cycles of different prime numbers.

Is there a coliopterist in the house?

(First time that sentence has appeared on blonde, I'd venture)

I will just confirm to passers-by that this is still the place that RSQ results will appear on Monday. You have not pressed the wrong button. Do not adjust your sets.

A quiz will be born

Wahey!

Blonde has gone very educational and highbrow recently. I'm loving that.

Nah, just in my head.

What's the worst that can happen?
