Hand from the £550 GUKPT sidey tonight.

Level 1, 25/50, assume effective starting stacks of 15k.

I raise mid position 150, next to act (hijack) calls, CO 3bets to 550, we both call (pot 1725).

Flop

Me and hijack check to pf 3bettor, who checks.

Turn

I bet something like 1150, hijack folds, CO has a think for about 40 seconds, then calls (pot 4025)

River

I bet 2600, CO thinks for about a minute, then raises to 8k.

CO's range here? It's level 1, he's unknown, but not been super active and has done nothing out of line. He does have a foreign accent that I haven't consciously placed yet.

His entire range looks like a set of jacks to me.

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion - only Jacks makes sense.

Unfortunately I'm not confident enough in my hand-reading skillz to think I can nail a villain's exact cards. Also folding sets is hard Sad

I assume b/f river is a better line than c/c?

What do we have?

Set of threes - mateyboy trap-checks his two-outer to get paid.

Hand really annoyed me as I acted too quickly on the river and would have had a better chance of making the fold if I'd not instaclicked call.

Very small chance he's got AA or KK.

But he's almost always got JJ here.

how/why would he ever have 88 here?

I wouldn't normally try so hard, but didn't have another opportunity I could wait for. I wasn't ready to surrender what I WANTED SO MUCH, that easily, I couldn't guarantee a call with me staying stoic and relying on a flinch "top pair" calling reflex.

Yeah 88 probs doesn't 3bet pre and would probs stab flop as well

Agree that it looks incredibly like Jacks

My thinking was this - if you're going to 3-bet 88 from the hijack you're not checking back a J74 flop.

Fold all hands here that can't beat JJ... the guy has basically turned them over and shown you 2 Jacks. snap muck.
