Well I thought this thread was about Herbie cashing at DTD.
I don't think MANTIS wrong on this issue. For sure child abuse is a very serious matter but c'mon if 600 people come out of the woodwork I'd gladly bet that there are a fair few which aren't genuine.
Somebody I know went through this type of allegation. Accused by an ex-mistress of abuse and rape just because my friend wouldn't leave his wife for her. 6 months went on before the police came to their senses and sided with him. Luckily, although he was arrested no charges were ever made and no press got to publish his name.
It all ended well for him as his wife forgave him and his name not tarnished. If his name was made public then I dare say he would have lost everything; wife, family, businesses. Now that would have been the real crime.
The abuse pool post was def wrong. Although, my money was on Rod Hull.

Cant see how the police hope to gain any convictions 40 years after the fact what evidence can possibly survive other than word against word... must be frustrating for them wasting their time and a vast amount of money in what amounts to a PR project to show they are taking the thing seriously....

I think the problem today is when society broach certain subjects like child abuse and racism people lose their minds and turn to jelly. So when 600 people make claims anybody who doesn't believe them is branded insensitive and distasteful. All I see these days are agencies encouraging people to make claims for accidents or ppi or whatever. We live in a society where making claims is a way of life. So my joke poked fun at this aspect of modern society.
You can see what I mean because that joke was removed as it was loosely associated with child abuse and therefore unacceptable. I understand what a serious issue child abuse is and feel that is much different from joking about people's over zealous desire to make claims for anything and everything.
There are now a few jokes in this thread.
So are you saying that you don't believe that Savile abused anyone or that you don't believe that 600 claims against him could all be genuine?
If the latter then I suspect you're right, and the investigation will presumably uncover this, or at least determine that there's insufficient evidence on a number of them.
But even if 95% of them prove to be unfounded that still means c30 people all independently stayed silent over this length of time, which raises many questions and can't easily be attributed to the weaknesses of the individuals themselves.

also isn't it 600 lines of enquiry? rather than 600 people?
and the enquiry is split into allegations against Saville, allegations against people that relate to the Saville case and allegations unrelated to his case but which were prompted by the publicity meaning people took the opportunity to speak up.
It's true that there are probably a number of lines which will come to nothing - but they can't tell which one's they are without investigating them and the alternative is to ignore the victims; which is pretty much what happened on several occasions in the past - which is why there seems to be such a high concentration now.

this one is a bit different in as far as it being pretty recent. With abuse being so rife god knows how this stayed covered up all these years.

Coronation Street's Michael Le Vell charged with child rape
Michael Le Vell Michael Le Vell has acted in Coronation Street since 1983
Coronation Street actor Michael Le Vell has been charged with a string of sex offences, including raping a child.
Greater Manchester Police said he is also accused of indecently assaulting a child and sexual activity with a child.
The actor, 48, who plays Kevin Webster in the ITV1 soap, faces a total of 19 charges relating to crimes allegedly committed between 2001 and 2010.
Met him years ago, but I was about 15 so a bit old for him. All I remember about him was that he was very dull and very short.

He did, he played a few telly poker shows too.
Even besides all of this, I'm sure Sally will take him back, she always does.
