I actually thought I was winning as well thats what got me, I had 5 buy-ins last night and this was my last one, I was out drawn on almost every hand i went broke on. Thems the breaks, I must have used up all my luck on the lottery scratchcard and getting the nookie from the wife.

IMO, if you're going to play the 77 at all, 4 x BB is not enough here. They are going to call 3 more BB after having limped in. A bigger bet might have scared away the pair of and the BB definately would not have called.

You'd likely get the same result though depending on the player with 88, and I agree, whichever way you played this, theres no getting away from it after the flop!

Well i did'nt want to over commit with 77, hence only 4 bb. I had been playing a reasonably tight game and my raises were getting some respect.

The guy with the 88 was really hesitant to call.

Which is why you should have made it all the more expensive. When you changed your game, you have been given more respect I take it? Capitalise on that, and play weaker hands as if they are stronger. If he was hesitant at 4x BB, whats he going to me like at 7, or 8. If he comes over the top of you, you've lost an extra couple of hundred chips.

4 x the b was the standard raise on the table for aces, if I played it any differently i would have looked suspect.

You can't come out with a comment like "the standard raise on the table for aces" ... what kind of game do you play? You need to randomise your betting pattern. You should be raising anywhere between 2x to 7x BB and making it consistently random. AA one time might be 3x BB, the next, in the same position, might be 5x BB.

Again, there is more than one way to skin a cat. You need to mix things up. You know this.

the table had settled to a standard raise regardless of the hand you held, As most good games tend to.

e.g      under the gun 4 x BB

Cut off re raises

you are all in.

standard stuff mikky, surely you know that a table settles?

You don't want the table to settle, you want to be playing opposite to the table. Surely you know that playing opposite to the table is the profitable way?

Plus, a settled table typically means a nice, tight, passive table. And in that case, you want to be changing those gears faster than a mclaren F1.

Thats exactly why you want the table to settle, every bugger goes passive, and you can raise with 77 and take a good pot.

When you said raise with 77, I thought you meant a raise, not a tickel with 4x BB Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

My point is, if you had been mixing up, randomising your raises, IMO you would be less likely to get a caller with your middle pair, than if you just keep making the same 4x BB every time. Plus, limpers are not going to be put off with a 4x BB raise after they've already put their 1x in. 4x BB in an unopened pot I can understand.
