Linux users hate Windows.
IPhone is more user-friendly but that's not in everyone's key spec.

In my personal opinion Apple hardware and software are absolutely top notch, and I almost went that way, but in the end I found them just too protective / exclusive / controlling.

Didn't say I don't hate Apple
But seriously, the android platform has always suited my needs a lot better than the iphone (and I really dislike itunes). For others, an iphone would be a far better choice than android; and others would be happy with either.
If Tom's going for an android phone, then the SIII is probably the best choice (I'd say it's better than the One X unless you're going to use a modded ROM on the One X to get it to multi-task properly and get the most out of the processor - then the One X and SIII are pretty much identical and it's a case of which one you like the look of the most) at the moment.

I agree, not much to choose between them. The burst mode on the camera and the better battery life swayed it for me.

SIII has a removable battery - so you can buy a spare(s), which you can't on the One X - something I dislike about it.
Sky Go isn't (or wasn't) supported on the One X, it is on the SIII (I think).
SIII uses an SD card, the One X doesn't. Not really a big deal to be honest, but think I prefer the SD card route as it allows for future upgrading.
So why did I choose the One X?
Love the build of the phone.
Has the burst mode on the camera as well (if burst mode is what I think it is). In fact the camera is excellent imo.
The jump in processor power and speed compared to my previous android phones and other around is pretty significant.
I always install a modded OS on my phones, so the HTC v Samsung flavours of the OS didn't matter to me.

A good rule in life is never to buy anything you don't have to in December. I think this works with upgrades too.
Any deal you find this week will be a lot less in January I would say. I am due an upgrade but just cannot find a nice small handset that I like. I only want to make and receive calls and texts.
Seems like the industry have forgotten about customers who don't want browsers, music apps etc.

Did you get your screen sorted, how did you break it and how much did the repair cost?
Do you use a case or a 'bumper'?
My current phone has a place to attach a lanyard, I tried it for a couple of days and found I loved it. So secure, no dropping or peeps snatching your phone in the street. Also useful for pulling it out of your jeans pocket.
Unfortunately the S3 doesn't have a lanyard attachment point, but I will fit a bumper that has one.

Not got round to sending mine off to get the screen fixed yet, as I use my phone a lot for work and trying to get another one setup to do everything I need first before I send the One X away to be fixed. Been too busy/lazy to get that sorted and thought it might be best to do it over Xmas or in the New Year. In the meantime I'll just keep slicing my finger to bits.
I'd previously dropped the phone a few times, including once from head height onto tarmac. The screen survived this abuse, and although the phone is well made, I'd also been lucky.
When I did the screen, I only dropped the phone from a bench - so less than two feet, but it fell onto a concrete floor covered in thin carpet tiles. I guess it landed 'perfectly' and from the sound it made when it landed, I knew the screen had been damaged.
If you're worried about doing the same to yours, I'd say a case would definitely have prevented my screen from going this time, but I prefer the phone without a case so was willing to take the gamble.
The SIII and the One X are the same size. Both have much larger screens than the Desire I previously used, noticeably larger. But both are pretty slim and I don't know about the SIII, but the One X feels a lot lighter than the Desire. It does make a bigger bulge in my pocket though...
