Have turned off and on many times with no joy.

Sons laptop - HP Pavilion G series, only purchased in September.

On starting it has black screen with message "Please install an operating system on your hard disk"

Hard Disk <3FO>

Tried the F10 at start up for rebooting options but no joy, have looked at the HP and other forums but is pretty much gobbledeygook to me.

Is it a case of failed hard drive that needs replaced or is there something I can try before taking it back?

Appreciated

Sounds like dead hard drive - as it's still in warranty just send it back.

Hopefully there's nothing too important on it.

Thanks Andrew, thought that may be the case.

Bought from John Lewis and has 2 year parts and labour guarantee so shouldn't have any problems

John Lewis are usually excellent with their customer service. So wouldn't foresee any problems.

If there's important stuff on it, it's often possible to make a successful recovery. But it can be expensive.
