Despite spending considerable time in casinos over the past few years player poker, and the occasional drunken black jack session (FML) I've only recently flicked it in on a roulette table.

Just generally wondering the betting strategies (of total lack of the former) people use?

I have 6 set numbers I bet on, and pray to the degen gods

As a new member, I'm not sure, but I think I'm supposed to say "Flame Away"

I remember a few years back there was this guy on the poker scene from Birmingham way called Tyrone. He actually played in the first series of Late Night Poker, and he always said that he was a "Professional Roulette Player".

He's not around presently as I believe he's on holiday at one of  Her majesty's "hotels" for the forseeable future, but I'm sure he would be only too happy to share his system with you when he's back on the scene.

I don't play roulette, but I'm sure that it's best to bet on the number that the ball is going to land on next, otherwise it would -EV because if you leave it to luck, the house has a built in edge.

I don't get any enjoyment out of roulette so don't play (read: I find other ways of losing my money, rather than I squirrel it away like a boss).

Lat time I went to Vegas, I knew I'd be railing a friend's lengthy roulette sessions, so picked some numbers in case I was really bored.

I went for the longest chain of Sexy Primes (prime numbers six apart - like the German sechs - maths gags ftw):

5
11
17
23
29

Couldn't tell you where they are on the wheel (I think 23 and 5 are close) but seemed to mean I was always in play.

Never felt so bored losing money.

American wheel is a different layout to the European version including 00.

So the usual tierce, neighbours, orphans etc. don't work there.

Mind you I did retire from playing roulette c1970.

My strategy is not to bet on roulette.

Working quite well for me so far.

Some like to bet consecutive numbers in a section of the wheel.  That way, it lands in your section... or it doesn't.  Those betting randomly chosen numbers seem to bemoan thier luck that they were always "next door" to a great number.  Ofc the maths doesn't change whichever way you do it.

In my youth, I dealt in casinos to pay my way through college.  I used to stand there watching a guy buy in for £100, put all his chips everywhere and as the ball was going round, I was trying to identify a number where he might win more than £105....  He would stand there all night, ofc the dealer would hit some blank numbers often enough to guarantee he never had a decent winning night, but often did his coconuts.

So, in recognition of the -EV nature, the only betting suggestion is to bet aggressively (not exposing yourself to the house edge for more than 4-5 spins) and to press hard enough to be able to win whatever you dream of winning from that.

Most times, you will be going home as skint as the £105 guy above, but once in a while you will get the absolute lot.

I'm so impressed that you knew the plural of tier.

I must admit that it's not a plural but the French spelling of the word.

The "tierce" or "tiers" bet covers one third of the wheel (not counting zero).

Tierce is the French word for "third", and I got "O" level French.
