Event #40: No-Limit Hold'em
Buy-in: $1,500
Prizepool: $2,917,350
Entries: 2,161
Remaining: 287
Play ended just outside the money
scotty77 Ryan Spittles is quoted as 4/287. Very best of luck to him later!
claypole Shaun Conning is quoted as 15/287. Best of luck to him too
Would be two very popular deep runs if they can happen

Event #41: Pot-Limit Omaha / Six Handed
Buy-in: $5,000
Prizepool: $1,880,000
Entries: 400
Remaining: 132
They've reached the end of eight one-hour levels and Day 1 is complete in Event #41: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha (Six-Handed). About 120 survived the first day of play in this three-day tournament out of a starting field of exactly 400, and by night's end the biggest stacks included Sorel Mizzi who made the most of the post-dinner levels to end the day with 146,400.
Chad Brown also ended the day well, concluding several levels' worth of chip accumulation to end with 139,600. Peter Charalambous likewise made a late push to end with 126,200.
Others enjoying successful Day 1s that ended with their bagging above average stacks included Juha Helppi, Davidi Kitai, Phil Galfond, and the two Deebs — Freddy and Shaun. Andy Bloch, Daniel Negreanu, Brian Rast, and Sam Farha will also be returning for tomorrow's Day 2.

Wandering round railing dem pokerz at Rio today, I saw two chaps playing chess. Neither was particularly strong but both were competent, club standard players.
A man comes to see them and explains that there is a man around who is interested in a game and that this bloke would lay $20,000 to $5,000 he would win. Was anyone keen?
Forget it's chess for a second. Is there any situation in which you would automatically agree to this arrangement in a game not based heavily in luck? You've no idea who this mystery man is or what his strength is. If he is a grandmaster, if you are a good club player, you're more like a 50/1 shot. And I would put good money on there being 20+ International Masters and Grandmasters in the WSOP. Does this not scream set-up to you?
Chap number one - who was winning the game in play - thought for a while, postulated and said "go on. I'll play him for $5,000".
I came back a bit later and he was playing against a different guy, who was obviously a much stronger player than I saw him playing earlier. The new chap was ripping him to shreds.
If that was the mystery 20k guy, it was the easiest $5,000 made yesterday without exception.
