Old photographs fascinate me, probably more than anything in the world.

Tonight I came across a thread on another forum that contained some amazing scenes.

Will list some in the pages below, and please feel free to add your own.

Here is a decent website that I'm just going thru now

I like this one.

It's of a well known blonde, on a boating holiday.

Cool as you like, in the old days.

Nuremberg Nazi rally, 1937

Just look at the scale of it, endless.  I wonder how many of the people in the crowd could imagine what the horrors of the next few years would bring.  And during WW2 and the aftermath, how many of them felt guilt/anger at themselves for being there?  EDIT:  Apparently its of a rally in Reichserntedankfest and not Nuremberg

Test pilot George Aird ejected from his English Electric Lightning F1 aircraft at a fantastically low altitude in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. “George was a test pilot with the De Havilland Aircraft. He was on finals for an emergency landing following a fire about 15 miles from Hatfield. At about 10 seconds from touchdown, at about 100 ft, the aircraft suddenly pitched nose up and, since there was no response to the controls, he ejected. The aircraft crashed on the airfield, broke up and caught fire."

Tremendous stuff Ryan.

Agree as to that Rally in Germany. Breathtaking.

The plane crash / man on the tractor is just so bizarre.

Could be a wonderful thread, this.

Best thread ever.

I just love old photographs. They're like time machines, you can go back to a point in history and see it as the people who were there saw it.

I love candid family photographs too. Where those now passed are forever young.

I can help thinking how lucky future generations will be to have the millions of photographs we take today.

Plans i scanned from special collections.

Holzminden POW Germany, July 1918, 60 officers began the escape attempt, getting away through a nearby field of rye. But the tunnel collapsed on the 30th man, blocking the escape route. Here we have a original note from the camp drawn by a POW which details the camp layout and where the escape tunnel was located.

This inspired many other escapes from camps and a very famous film.

Earlier on I opened one of the history thumbnails and there were 'next' button / previous buttons, but now when I open one I see that individual photograph only.

So much for turning it off and on.

Jodie Foster skateboarding, c. 1976.

Always had a thing for Jodie Foster. Pity she bats for the other side.
