Some years ago I read a piece on, I think, poker.rec or a similar forerunner to the likes of Blonde and 2+2 which gave what appeared to be a rational maths-based explanation of the 'cash out curse'.
In essence, as I recall it, building your balance occurs on an upswing, cashing out means that you can't handle the concomitant downswings and thus go bust rather than just suffer a reduced balance.

I believe that I cause the arrival of an adverse river card for me when I name the card or variety of card I want to avoid.

Sounds a bit like regression to the mean.  Would make sense if they withdraw after a good run or a bink, and then their remaining bankroll is too small to absorb any downswing.

It's funny how the human mind seeks out patterns and causality when there isn't any.
