Last night I decided to dig a bit of compost in to a newly cleared patch of soil in my garden.  I had about a quarter bag of compost in the shed which would have done just the job.  I picked up carried it 5 yards and felt a sting on the back of my neck.  I did the stupid thing and tried to swat whatever it was that had got me, and then realised I was surrounded by several angry wasps.  I copped for a couple more stings on the way back to the house.

I have had a proper look in the bag this morning and can confirm I now have a compost bag on my patio with a wasps nest within it.  I can see the top or the whole wasp nest and the bit I can see is about 6 inches by 3.  I also had a look in my shed and there were at least 20 wasps who must have been pissed that somebody had moved their home.  This bunch seemed much more aggro than the lot gently flying out of the bag on the patio (more your Plenop wasps than your Tokay wasps).

I am not a fan of moving the bag back where it came from given what happened last time I moved it and don't fancy me vs angry wasps in a confined shed.  Call in the pros, nuke the bag myself, nuke the shed, leave it where it is for the summer and hope the kids don't get stung, or something else?  I am guessing the shed wasps will just die, leave or calm down if I leave them for a few days, and guess there isn't another nest in there, though am not going to spend too much time investigating in there right now!

All suggestions welcome.

Once a thing's been done, it's been done. So why all this nostalgia? I mean, for the 60s and 70s, you know, looking backwards for inspiration, copying the past. How's that rock 'n' roll? Do something of your own. Start something new. Live your life now.

Your local council should have a Pest Control team who will come out and get rid properly for approx £40.

Especially if there's a chance your children could get stung.

I absolutely hate wasps and haven't noticed many about lately, hope that doesn't change with the warm weather arriving.

I got the pest control people out to deal with some wasps but they entirely failed to get rid of the problem, plus they charged me £400.

I got badly stung.

Do you like your neighbours?

If not make yourself a couple of slices of toast with strawberry jam, empty a clip of calippos, launch the lot over the fence and open the shed door. You then have a short window to erect a Glastonbury-esque super fence designed to prevent the return of the wasps.

EDIT: Make preparations for the fence first (sourcing materials, digging holes etc.) as window of time likely to prove insufficient to complete the task from a standing start. God speed.
