Well - I certainly don't agree with these utterly pointless vans, but telling ILLEGAL immigrants to leave is obviously different to telling immigrants to leave.

I wonder what the author of that blog you linked would recommend for policy.  Free entry for anyone with no need for any paperwork and instant access to the welfare system perhaps?

Not coming up with good alternatives isn't a prerequisite to saying that a current policy is just the worst.

the whole thing is just ridiculously ill-conceived.  People that are here illegally and want to stay certainly aren't going to suddenly decide to want to 'go home' as a result of these vans.  the offer of help with documentation etc might appeal to a section of illegal immigrants who might wish to return to their countries, but the 'go home or get arrested' slogan wouldn't make me inclined to contact them either. It's just the tories pandering to the voters that they've lost to UKIP or the BNP in recent years to be 'seen' to be doing something, rather than considering policies to tackle immigration issues that might be more effective but less in the public eye.

the whole 'go home' theme is just horrible too and isn't the kind of language that should be tolerated in this day and age.  Our home, and 'theirs' is the planet earth.  there but for the grace of god.

I think you should title your thread more appropriately.

Things like this make me shudder with embarrassment about UK politics

I don't even mean the particular subject or content. Its the fact that 2 weeks after these vans were brought into operation the tories made an official press release saying the "scheme was working" and "immigrants are leaving"

Who do they think they are kidding? The politicians in this country have no idea what goes on in wider society and its getting worse! But its ok because they are focusing on the key issues like internet porn!

Anyone who takes an active interest in politics in this country and stands by watching and listening to the shit that is pumped out of the system is an embarrassment. If you have firm political beliefs, then take a stand against this bullshit, make a change. Otherwise lets all just ignore they inbred clowns that are "career politicians"

Absolutely.  Cameron's usual ploy of trying to get the core vote back onside while not actually doing anything.

Unfortunately the FPTP system means that voting for an independent (for example) is pretty much a wasted vote.  Although I guess Tories and Labour are so similar now that all votes are pretty pointless Sad  Hard to see what anyone can do with this rotten system.  Ultimately everyone will panic in the General Election.  The UKIP 20% or whatever it is will vote Tory because, even though they think Cameron and Osbourne are useless, they don't want Labour to win.

Just to make it clear I don't think the swearing is bad I just think you should have added 'illegal' in the title.

That aside do you think this is a good idea - ie will any illegal immigrants decide to leave - or a collosal fcking waste of taxpayers money and more evidence that Theresa May is a useless idiot.

It's a waste of money.  And done only for their own political ends.

Poor stuff.

Obv waste of money..but illegal immigrants are an issue..unfortunately we live in a society where if you so much as advocate any action against illegal immigrants you are immediately denounced as a racist just shy of the swastika club. Its incredibly frustrating living in a so called free society but you cannot voice sound political views without being shoehorned into such an extreme generalisation..

I watched the rerun of the opening ceremony for last years Olympics the other day and it was truly refreshing to feel proud of being British for a change without also having to feel guilty about the fact as well...

There is a huge difference between thinking there should be controlled immigration and treating illegal immigrants in this manner.  Almost everybody that is sensible thinks that there have to be immigration controls but that is a world away from demonising those that are here and creating a dangerous witchhunt against them and, often, anyone that shares their nationality or skin colour irrespective of their immigration status.  The government knows that the campaign will make zero difference to the problem.  There is absolutely no chance that one of these posters will make a single illegal immigrant decide to go home yet it will make huge parts of the community feel very uncomfortable and could foster community unrest yet it might deliver a few votes to the Conservative Party at huge cost to the taxpayer rather than Tory grandees.

I think the example used about the Olympics is a very poor one and almost completely contrary to this example.  The Olympics were great because there were inclusive.  We celebrated as one the victories of a Muslim born in Somalia that won two golds for our country.  Campaigns like this serve to make people like Mo Farah feel uncomfortable in this country for political capital.
