So I checked my bank account today and they have levied a surcharge of nearly £200 on a car hire I made last week.

I rang to ask why this was.

"You didn't bring the car back full of fuel and you were late returning the vehicle so you were charged an extra day"

1. Was a complete lie. I filled it to overflowing 1/4 mile from the drop off. However the drop off was 15 miles from the depot and they thought I'd dropped it off at the depot.

2. Was true. If you count 3 minutes past the agreed time (actually parked the car at exactly 1pm but was 3 minutes getting my keys to them). Which is a bit harsh seeing as they were 90 minutes late delivering the car!

Eventually they agreed to repay the money - but not immediately - it will take 7 working days! How can they take the money immediately but take 7 days to repay?

If I didn't check my statement, they probably would have got away with this.

Avis. Avoid.

I used them 6 months ago, when i took the car back i handed the guy the guys and he signed it off for me and i left,  4 days later £250 was taken out my bank, i rang up and asked why and the guy said there was a dent in the roof,  i kicked off and said the guy when taking it back never checked the car and signed back as ok so its not my problem,

i was then given a refund!

Definitely good advice to pay for things like this on a credit card. Two benefits if they try and stitch you up - firstly you aren't actually out of pocket if it takes a week to sort out as you only have to pay when your statement is due. Secondly, credit card companies give you additional insurance on lots of purchases and will actively chase things up like Regards mentioned.

Also the possibility of dual liability if you need to make a claim for faulty goods

Had a running battle with budget in Tasmania this year after they charged my card twice. Pretty sure the only reason they refunded was that it was on my credit card and i threatened to dispute it.

These companies must make quite a bit of money out of people who can't be bothered to check/chase these things up.

I mean really - what a shambles of a company.

The "refund" arrived back in my bank account this morning.

And it's for £40 more than they took out!

I dunno really.

Is £40 a fair administrative fee for my time wasted in spotting the error, finding out the correct number to complain to and hanging on the phone for about half an hour?
