Omaha - Basics ?

Ok I  haven't played Omaha before but I am in a little club on stars and they have a Omaha event on.  I want to support the group so going to play but have no/little clue.   I think I am right, you have to play 2 cards of the 4 dealt and then normal Holdem rules apply?   It is also a limit event , just to add a little more confusion for my pea sized brain.

So as few words as possible   any advice, best starting hands and ermmmmmmmmmmmmm  nah that should do.

I also played "a Triple stud"  event with them last night and am mildly embarrassed to say I won it. ( was only 5 players, but what ever, took nearly 3 hours to complete  and I will never play it again)

Don't misclick reg an Omaha DYM next door, then call the river bet when 4 to the flush comes on the board and you hold only the bare Ace!!!! #stillcashedlikeaboss

Ive been primarily a PLO player for a good few years now and I always say to beginners who ask these sort of questions that if your starting cards cannot make at least 4 good hold em hands, dont play.

For example.

AKQ9 you have AK AQ QK Q9 K9 A9 - that qualifies with 6 strong NL hands so you're going to be able to make strong hands and have strong redraws. Adding in suitedness naturally increases the strength.

It's ok to open something like  from late position but bear in mind we only have 2 decent NL hands in AQ and 67 and 2 very marginal ones (A7 and A6).

When you are drawing, try and draw to the nuts or fairly nutted draws. In NL if you have  on a board of  you generally have a strong hand that you can play very aggressively. In PLO lets say you have    this is considerably weaker because almost all the outs that improve you, make someone else bigger nuts.

That seems like a fairly good first few tips for a newbie!

Switching from holdem to Omaha, you'll notice sets being much more frequent. That sounds obvious because everybody has two more cards (and five more two-card combinations in their hand) but it catches beginners out. Look for ways to have the nuts on the river, rather than on the flop.

can't say I agree with this part Tal.

Having the nuts at any point is a good thing. Obviously when you are playing the right hands you will often have redraws to bigger nuts which is great also.

I phrased this poorly.

What I mean is don't get too attached to hands where you don't have redraws. When I very first started playing Omaha, it was a tactic that worked out for me.
