My grandson will be 9 in February and is very keen on having a games console for Christmas mainly to be able to play Minecraft (we already have a Wii but minecraft isn't available for that)
Seems that the PS3 currently doesn't run this game so we're pretty much stuck with having to get an xBox
I have little to no interest in shoot em up games or football/motor racing simulations and nor does he so far but his position on this may change

there seems to be a lot of options and from what I can see a new version is about to hit the shops, or has already?

so which one do we buy please?

Minecraft is better on an ordinary PC, the console versions are a bit cut down. Maybe get him a PC? You don't need a very powerful PC to play Minecraft + if you don't like shooters or racing games, a PC might be better for other types of games too.

was going to say same thing. Best thing with PCs is the amount of games that are freeplay these days....

Much harder and no tutorial.

sadly this isn't considered a viable alternative

He already has access to a PC but at 8(and 3/4) he's probably not ready for the "much harder" option

I mean don't take it as gospel as I've played probably less than an hour total time on the PC but it was fairly tough. I imagine the xbox version with the tutorial is much more accessible.

I have my PC set up complete with Xbox controller and don't notice the difference in game.  The other advantages of PC gaming (though this may or may not be a problem), is it doesn't cause arguments about who gets the telly.

I think I have lost touch with the kids somewhat, though I would imagine that if you had to get an Xbox, although and Xbox360 would definitely do the job for now, it just wont be considered as 'cool' as the newly released Xbox One.

The XBone is not cool. Nor are the XBoners who have one.
