Having watched (some of) Lincoln yesterday, dreadful film but interesting point in history, I followed up with some reading into civil rights progress in the US.

It reminded me of how some things are so alien to us today that if you ponder them, the recency kind of takes your breath away. For example, only 50 years ago racial segregation was still enshrined in state law in large parts of the US and it took states like West Virginia until 1994 to finally remove state legislation for 'separate race' schools.

I guess the list is endless - WWII, the PC, Flushy playing 3-6 limit etc

Maybe cause I'm getting old and can remember all manner of things that are so so different now to a very recent past, the subject interests me. If you want to add anything we can move this to the diary section.

As recently as 300 years ago this man's view was mainstream

same sex marriage = greater incidence of natural disasters

A UKIP councillor has blamed the recent storms and heavy floods across Britain on the Government's decision to legalise gay marriage.

Probs a tad more recent than that in the states where racial segregation was law

I am always reminded of this sad tale, when I think of how things have changed.

I suppose it is nearly 60 years since, but in the greater scheme of things, that is nothing.

World is full of stuff like this.

Hopefully in 20 years time we will be able to say the same about same-sex marriage, immigration etc.

This has done untold damage to UKIP's appeal to the wider electorate imo.
