Fine! I'll start.

You can make a rectangular prism, can't you? If so, you can't whale it with anything else. You just have to decide whether your class would know how to work out the volume of it.

year 11 is 16 year olds in england....

top set, definitely would expect them to be capable of the volume of these two at minimum

Well, what is it? It's a cuboid isn't it?

Or we saying BangBang is a very astute man indeed and has exploited a loophole?

Obviously they could work it out!

If you start with a square prism and stretched the base at one end, you would get a different shape. From the side on, rather than an equilateral or isosceles triangle, you would get a scalene triangle.

There is no way you are telling me that they know how to work out the area of a cone and triangular based pyramid and not a Rhombus!! Please can you double check and ask him/her again as they surely must be able to do it if they can work out the area of a triangle and square!!

I am not sure I follow, it sounds to me like you have created a trapezium on the front face by stretching "the base at one end". Therefore that's the constant shape running through the prism, not a rectangle.

Rhombus is a 2D shape - they can work out the area though Wink

Well, BangBang should be here to answer for himself...

However...

I mean stretching the base to make a rectangle. So the dimensions of the four sides at the base are, say 2,5,2,5.

If you're not sure what shape he means, must be wrong.

It's at this point I remember what a prism is.

Carry on.
