Here are a sample of some the questions I couldn't answer:

Why are there 60 minutes in an hour?

Why are there 24 hours in a day?

Why do months have different amount if days in?

Why can't I support Chelsea?

Who invented time zones?

The minutes and hours come from the fact that the ancient people who developed our time system (Babylonians?) worked out that 60 was a very nice number as it can be divided by 2,3,4,5 & 6 with no remainder, so they used that as the base. This is also why there are 360 degrees in a circle - it can be divided nicely.

The months have different days because (and I'm typing this without looking it up so it may be bullshit and I get a QI klaxon) when Julius and Augustus Caesar named months after themselves, they wanted them to have more days than the other months so made them 31 days. This then screwed up the other month lengths which is why they're all uneven (though the Romans only had ten months - there was no January and February - which is why Sept-Dec have names which mean 7th-10th when they're actually 9th-12th months of the year).

Greenwich was decided as being the centre of time at some meeting of science people and the time zones then follow from that.

The 13/24/60/360 stuff is from the ancient civilisations (Babylonian/Mesopotamian), because they used numerical systems like that rather than our modern 10/100/1000 one.

A sundial is circular. A circle has 360 degrees, so you can see the connection.

It's something along those lines.

Why can't he support Chelsea?

Because if you let that happen you'd be in the Josef Fritzel class of good fathers.

Great clip there Camel.

Was mulling over what I would say generally in your shoes and I would be lazy and just say to him, if indeed he is learning how to read the time rather than having general questions about it, that whatever the small hand is on, name that number first and explain the numbers on the clock are for saying the first part of the time only.

Then for the second hand, if your clock has 5 little increments between each number, between 12 and 1, for example, explain that each of those account for the second number when you are reading the time, and that from 12-1, 1-2, 3-4, you are just adding five onto it, with 12 the start and once you get back around you start again, with 59 being the biggest number of minutes you can get before starting the hour.

The first number equals the hour and the second one the minutes.

Not quite sure why i have written out a blow for blow but i have and it isn't going to waste and I am only just realising that Jake can probably read the time but he just had questions about it! I will leave this up for the embarrassment, I don't care Smiley

Only recently got my head around it myself you see Cheesy

Dave Allen is a big favourite of my Gran, both Irish helped, saw she had a DVD collection of his work. Going from that clip will need to watch it with her.
