Probably the dumbest thread I'll ever start, but here goes.

For the last five or six weeks, there has been a strange, feint, high pitched noise in my bedroom. It sounds like tinatus, but my wife can also hear it.

Its not loud, so I can sleep through it. It sounds like it could be an alarm from a neighbour, but I cant hear it when I go outside.

It happens at random times, but always between about 9pm and 8am. Never during the daytime.

I can only hear it in my bedroom. Not in any other room in the house.

I thought it might be our new boiler, but we've had that almost six months and it doesn't seem to correlate with when that's on.

Obviously I'm not expecting anyone here to know what or where it is, but anyone have any tips for finding where its coming from? I've literally scoured the entire house/cupboards/rooms/draws/radiatiors etc. It doesnt get louder or quieter, you can either hear it or you cant.

What about getting some sort of microphone and connecting it to a laptop or other device that can monitor sound. Then move it around looking for where it finds the most noise.

Never tried anything like this before so not sure what software would be needed to be sensitive enough.

Do you have any electrical devices in your bedroom? We have the same thing. I barely notice it tbh but it drives my missus insane. We pinned it down to the electrics and specifically an extension chord I had plugged in. Unplug everything and see if you can still hear the sound.

Yup had exactly the same thing for about 3 months and it drove me effing mad. Finally found out it was one of the electrical boxes but I didn't know what to do with it because I'm scared of anything electric and was too much of a nit to call an electrician.

Eventually decided to try to tackle it when was tilted one day, got a screwdriver to open the box and as I did the noise got worse, it was the casing vibrating ever so slightly causing the noise. I tightened up the screw and it sorted it out thank god.

This is just a fancy way of saying have you tried turning it off and on?

Is this another one of those "What's my drink?"/"I met a footballer yesterday" threads? I miss those.

What would Philomena Cunk say? Is that noise you're hearing the sound of things? You know, the sound that things in the world make when you put them together?

The thread reminded me of this blast from the past:

Surely we have done an investigation by now? What was the culprit?
