This is Phil in his time playing for Worcestershire.

The ball hit him in an area of his skull which is not protected by a traditional helmet.

All the best with your recovery Phil - terribly unlucky to be hit in that spot.

Everything crossed that he pulls through.

Similar happen to Phil Simmons, and he made a full recovery, so lets hope for the best.

During a 1988 tour match against Gloucestershire on his debut tour of England he was struck on the head by a fast ball from David Lawrence in bad light at Bristol. His heart stopped and he required emergency surgery at Frenchay Hospital, from which he recovered fully. He remains in close contact with the surgeon who saved his life, Nigel Rawlinson.

Very sad news, RIP.

Feel awfully sad for Sean Abbott too. Hope he can come through this ok.

(would it be possible to remove the picture of Hughes getting hit? That is a very disturbing image now)

Tighty has now removed it.

I did have 2nd thoughts about posting that photo, as it happens, but I was hoping the injury would not turn out as bad as it ultimately did.

There was quite a hoohah about another photo, which the Sydney Herald (?) posted on it's front page.  I easily decided not to post that, as it showed Philip, on the ground moments after, that was a truly horrible photo. Surprisingly, it remains on google Images. A matter of taste & decorum, I suppose, as was the photo I posted.

Thanks Tony.

I don't think you (or whoever put an image on the Sydney Herald front cover) can be blamed, no one expected this tragic conclusion.

RIP Phil Hughes

I took up cricket again last season and really enjoyed my season. I batted several times and never one wore a helmet as the pitches we play on the ball rarely reaches above waist height.

Phil was using an older style helmet as professionals dont like to change their equipment, a bit like a dart thrower not changing his weight/style of darts. There was a newer helmet available to Phil with about an extra inch of cover at the back but who knows even if he was wearing that helmet things still could of turned out the same.

I guess what im getting at is this was a very rare freak accident which is like to never happen again. I hope Shaun Abbott manages to recover from this, he must me in a terrible place right now.
