I've heard you can get very reasonable food and drink in Venice if you go to one of the cafes around St Mark's Square.

My butcher's lad just got back from his honeymoon and said he got change(just) from €20 for one espresso, a gondola ride for €80, and pasta meal for two costing a mere €150.

You do get around a bit for an old fella.

It's true about the prices Ralph. I needed a slash so I went into one of the cafes on the square with the intention of ordering a soft drink and using the loo. The cheapest drink was a 330ml Fanta costing €10. As always though, there are alternatives. Less than 5 minutes walk away I found a delightful little back street place that did coffee and a crusty ham roll for a €4.99. Needless to say I made my contribution to the Venitian economy and rising water levels there.

I spent some time watching the gondolas. What beautifully made craft they are, they must cost a fortune. It's fascinating to see how deftly the gondoliers maneuver them using only the one oar which pivots around a wooden joist, swindletree fashion, acting as both a scull and a rudder.

We were in Turin yesterday and and we arrived in Marseille today. Each new visa seems to be trying to outdo the last.

As I was riding he lyrics to a song by Charles Asnavour were running through my head, "Yesterday when I was young, and life was sweet like rain upon my tongue..." and I thought, when I was young life seemed to stretch out in front of me forever, I thought I had an unlimited supply, those lyrics didn't apply to me, it's now that I'm old and can see the end approaching that life is really sweet, and not just on days like today when I'm on holiday, but every day, even the mundane and crappy ones.

We're still managing to find amazingly good value digs.

Look at this place. £49 for 3 people, breakfast included.

We went off road, following a river bank for about a mile. We bumped into a couple of Roma lads.
