In all my years of playing poker I can honestly say that only on 1 occasion have I ever discovered a reliable consistent tell on another player and time and time again it proved correct. Now in-keeping with trying to create new threads I thought that it would be interesting (or not) for us to hear any tells you've discovered that helped you own another player.

This shouldn't be used to 'out people' but just as a bit of harmless fun. So here's mine....

About 8 years ago there was an aggressive player in Walsall who used to always get the better of me. It really bugged for about a month so I decided to watch his every move. It suddenly dawned on me after he showed a bluff that a vein on his left temple was pulsating. Armed with this new bit of information I made a mental note over the course of the evening when this vein made an appearance. After about an hour of further play it was like 10/10 for pulsating on bluffs and no sign of it when he had the best hand.

So it began, I started using this tell by 3/ 4 betting him, reapplying the pressure that he was running the table with. After about a dozen times of folding to me he was visibly frustrated and ending up calling an all in bet with K9 off against my K10 S. He lost Smiley

For the following month he would never get involved with me and made my life so much easier. I have not seen him since and pretty sure he gave up poker. I'm not saying that I was the reason but it does make me smile.

The only reliable tell I've ever seen was an old bloke who would lean over to look at the flop and if he liked it he would go "Ooh" and if he didn't he would blow a raspberry.

We used to have a friendly home game and one of my mates got a royal flush.  "Ohh, errrr, errrr, All in" he excitedly said.  Needless to say it was folds all round as we all picked up on that tell.

Only ever had a couple of reliable tells. One was a local tourney where this guy kept trying to avoid looking at the flop but couldn't help string at it and his eyes would almost pop out his head every time he looked at the ace on the flop.

Other time was a home game where one of my friends hands would shake whenever they had the nuts. Remember them looking at the river and hands remained steady so I bluffed and they relooked at their hand and the river and started shaking, new straight away they had rivered a straight lol

I've got an absolute dead cert tell on a good friend of mine, he counts out the chips he's betting with in front of his stack if he's bluffing, but bets with one swift movement if he has a hand he thinks is winning.  I cannot think of a time when this hasn't been accurate.
Obviously I haven't told him, and have no plans to do so! He knows I've got a read on him but I've told him it's not in my best interests to tell him!

I once asked Phil (philthepower) Clarke if I had a tell and he said yes.

Its just as much fun for somebody to think you have a tell on them, as actually having one.

Alex thought for a long time that all the regs had one on him in the DTD cash games!

That was a slightly bad example, because we did. But you get what i mean.

playing a festival event at Luton and a loud obnoxious London player was running all over the table

He beat me in a few pots and a short while later we went on break

Back we came, and with a smirk he told me "I've been talking to my mate that knows you"...pause "we've got a really good tell on you, very reliable"

no idea if he did or not, but it sure played me up mentally that night

I was just thinking of posting in the "Time of your poker life" thread about some spells at DTD where all the regs paid off all my value bets and folded to all my bluffs, so much so I was no longer welcome in the games! That bloody tell...

Some years ago when casinos used to get lots of students playing, three French lads used to come to Stoke Genting. There was one lad I nicknamed "Kangaroo", I kid you not every time he got a big hand or made a hand he would bounce up and down excitedly in his seat.

At my local pub game we once had a player do the following: Claim he hadn't looked at his hand. Do laps of the room acting like his life depended on the hand while his opponent was in the tank. He then celebrated behind opponent (like happy dance celebrations) opponent catches a glimpse of this, insta fold. I know the celebrator had

Same player did same thing a few weeks later this time he had said he had looked tho. He had AA and was snapped off with Two Diamonds Two Clubs by a monster stack that knew he was behind. His anguish turned to celebrations that got louder and more enthusiastic.  two hearts on the river. I couldn't cope.

A legend of the Teesside poker scene, and known beyond, frequently manages to get a look at his cards without people knowing.

It's amazing how often he will raise 'blind' and then go all in over a 3bet proclaiming 'I don't care, time to go home' and then roll over AA.

It's also amazing how people still buy it.

I used to play in a spieler in the West End of London in the early 1980's and virtually all of the poker games at that time were either 7-stud or 5-card stud with a stripped deck, a deck without 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's and 6's.

This 5-card game was played in virtually all of the spielers of which there were many, probably half a dozen or more in The West End alone. This particular spieler was run by the legendary "Cowboy" who was a good friend of mine and would often back me if I needed him to. The poker game was run by a couple of Spanish guys one of whom was a Vic regular for donkey's years and still might be if he's in circulation.

I got wind of the fact that the the two Spanish guys were signalling their hole-cards to each other using a very simple code. One chip on top meant an ace, two was a king and three meant a queen. I therefore knew two players' holecards plus my own out of eight seated which was a rather significant edge.

Proper tells those were.
