Her Majesty hosted a lunch for members of The Order of Merit, which is, perhaps, one of the most distinguished group of individuals known, & limited to just 24.

Without googling, which ones can you name?

We owe a great deal to some of those chaps.

This Ferrari is to be auctioned shortly.

A bid of £9 million should do the job.

Ones I know (rather than cause offence or confusion, I'll use their birth names, in case I call a Lord a knight or anything equally improper):

David Attenborough, Norman Foster, Tim Berners-Lee, Simon Rattle, Betty Boothroyd, Martin Rees, John Howard, John Crètien, (James?) Rothschild, Tom Stoppard, HM & Prince Phillip.

Can't say I recognise the others.

You did a lot better than I ever could.

Excluding Royalty, I think I got 3 of them.

YELLOW CARD for Tal Bloke.

He failed to note that the photo includes the brother of a gentleman who, in a very important game of chess, beat none other than Tal, & is one of the most successful British chess players ever.

The photo includes Sir Roger Penrose (# 13), who is the brother of Jonathan Penrose.

Apparently Jonathan suffered from nerves, & so retired from "live" Chess, & became a postal player.

Sir Roger seems quite bright.

Some clever family, that, hard to think of any family so distinguished in their achievements - look at this little lot.

Just imangine if you add all those ages together how many life years experience they have, they would be almost up with you Tony.

Folly of me not to spot the brother of someone never likely to be in the line-up!

Roger Penrose popularised the Penrose Triangle, said to be "impossibility in it's purest form". (Thank you, google).

Look at these 3 photos for too long, & you'll go nutso.

Behave Mo.

The eldest is 98, but remarkably, 3 of them are younger than me.

The youngest of them all is a man who changed our lives more than anyone I can think of, for over half the world already, & eventually almost every living person - Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited with the invention (creation?) of the World Wide Web. His work has, literally, changed the world, but oddly, I don't think he made much money out of it.

The annual schools chess match in Hamburg took place this week. It sees teams from schools play against each other, where the schools are divided by whether they fall to the east or west of the river Alster, which flows through the middle of the city.

It's been going since 1958 and the overall board score is currently 23,806.5 v 21,439.5 in favour of "Rechtes Alsterufer", the schools to the East.

http://en.chessbase.com/post/joys-of-chess-rechtes-gegen-linkes-alsterufer

Looks like absolute chaos!

The best performing school on the winning team gets to keep the trophy on behalf of their side of the river.

In a world where so much is made of wasted childhood and lost innocence, what a wonderful reminder this is that children can have fun together.
