What a ripping yarn the great train robbery is, I've read endless accounts of it.

Like the Titanic or Jack the Ripper, it's one of those stories that continue to fascinate people the world over.

If I had to compile a "Top 10 most fascinating news stories" in my lifetime, that would most certainly be in it.

Strange to think most blonde members were not even born when it happened, the sum stolen was just £2.5 million, & the villains got a collective 300 years in jail.

And do you remember the aura the "Slipper of the Yard" had?

1984

It was just a regular demonstration outside the Libyan Embassy in London, until, suddenly, a snipers bullet killed WPC Yvonne Fletcher.

1986

Journalist John McCarthy is kidnapped & held hostage in Beirut as part of a wider Lebanese hostage crisis.

It was to be 5 years before he was eventually released.

He is an extraordinary man, but oddly, his Wiki page says almost nothing about him.

His book was good though. There were periods when they folded him up and locked him inside a metal toolbox so that they could transport him on the back of a Land Rover. He literally couldn't move at all and was terrified that something would happen to his captors while he was in there.

I honestly think I would rather have died on the spot than go into that toolbox.

Nope...that one was classed as a dead heat.

1956

Harold Macmillan unveiled something radically new to us at the time - Premium Bonds.

We thought these were great - a risk free freeroll. Arguably, not quite risk free, if you compared returns with interest rates, but really, you could not lose. You could always cash them in at original face value.

We all had some - I had £5 worth, never won a bean, but, without fail, checked my numbers every single week. I guess I still have them, too, but I've not checked my numbers for around 50 years. I could be rich.....

They generated spectacular headlines. The numbers were generated electronically, (unheard of at the time) by something  known as "Ernie" - Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment. Over one third of the UK population still hold Premium Bonds.

It beggars belief that millions play the National Lottery every week, where the odds are far, far, worse. (About 35p in the £ is returned as prizes, I seem to recall).

Soon after their introduction, a minority of people started questioning the validity of Ernie, "it's rigged". 40 years  Online poker emerged, & the riggies found a new home. They show no sign of leaving yet, bless them.

1960

H-Bomb protest, Trafalger Square.

Perhaps my memory plays tricks, but demos were generally peaceful & well-ordered then, & not infiltrated or hijacked by troublemakers & loonies.

Up to 1,000,000 were killed during the Rwandan genocide, at a rate of 10,000 per day.

The majority of them were hacked to death by machete.

How did we allow this to happen?
