Just shut it Marky.

By way of retaliation, here's Robbie in an Elvis costume. Suck on that sunshine.

I'm a big Robbie fan, but that Suspicious Minds rendition is tez...

I remember reading a good book on Elvis, when I was about 12. It was written by 2 brothers, who worked as his bodyguards, and detailed his descent into addiction etc.

Robbie Williams is being compared with Elvis?

Is this a joke?

1975

40 years ago today, the deciding Test Match at Headingley had to be abandoned after protesters dug up the pitch, & poured oil all over it.

The Match had to be abandoned, robbing England of the chance to win the Ashes.

The Metropolitan Police, always on the ball, announced they were looking for "three men who travelled from London to Leeds on a train".

The protest was "George Davis is innocent", & was quite a tale. He had been imprisoned for armed robbery, but later released on appeal, after what was deemed an unsafe verdict. (However, it was legally held that it did not mean he was innocent).

A year later, he was caught bang to rights, armed robbery again, & he got 15 years. He was released on parole after 6 years, & promptly caught again for a mailbag robbery. Proper wrong 'un.

Cracking story.

1987

Hungerford Massacre.

A much darker story this one, when 15 people were shot dead in sleepy Hungerford by Michael Ryan, who, after being eventually surrounded in a local school, shot himself. Victims included his own mother.

Prime Minister Thatcher later visited the scene.

1991

An attempted coup d'état in Moscow to unseat Gorbachev eventually failed, but was the beginning of the end for the USSR. Estonia declared itself independent the very next day, & soon the pack of cards all tumbled.

I loved this Spitting Image puppet of Gorbachev. In fact I loved the whole series. This was the first time I had seen untouchable 'establishment' figures lampooned so mercilessly.

I thought some of them were a little cruel, to be honest. But yes, the Show marked a turning point, & from then on, nobody was exempt from mockery.

1999

As dramatic, stunning, unexpected, news stories that made you gasp go, this might just have been one of the most surprising ever.

It was - as news stories go - the perfect storm.

Princess Diana, the darling of the Media & the public around the world, was killed in a car crash. It happened at 4am, so we learned the news as we awoke.

We thought it was a hoax. How could it be true? We rang friends (no social media then), & constantly updated Ceefax.

As the day wore on, we realised it was true. This really was the unthinkable.
