If you went to him with what we would now call a first world problem, my dad would say, "I'll write to the food office immediately".

1976

To a great fanfare, the InterCity 125 was introduced, the first one ran from Paddington to Bristol, & the fare was £5.

They were due to be withdrawn in 2006, but nearly 40 years after introduction, many of them remain in service, still going strong.

They are smelly, noisy, belch clouds of acrid smoke, but have character, personality, & are perfectly lovely.

1992

An El-Al 747 Cargo flight crashed in Amsterdam, shortly after take off.

One engine sheared off due to metal fatigue -  they are designed to shear off cleanly in the event of overload - but the engine hit another engine as it detached, so both engines broke off, the wing flaps were damaged, & the place crashed into the city, killing all 4 crew, & 39 people on the ground.

I thought I knew all about Tony Rolt, one of my earliest motor racing memories was him winning the Le Mans 24 hours in that oh so beautiful C-Type Jaguar, perhaps the prettiest racing touring car ever.

In a way, he invented 4 wheel drive, too, & the 4 wheel drive Audi Quattros used engineering principles that he first put together.

I never knew his war story though, I'm amazed.
