1980: John Lennon shot dead
Former Beatle John Lennon has been shot dead by an unknown gunman who opened fire outside the musician's New York apartment.
The 40-year-old was shot several times as he entered the Dakota, his luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side, opposite Central Park, at 2300 local time.
He was rushed in a police car to St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he died.
His wife, Yoko Ono, who is understood to have witnessed the attack, was with him.

Crikey, remember that as if it were yesterday. At the time, it seemed so unfair, a "tragedy", but I suppose in the greater scheme of things it was not a disaster.
In a way, it enhanced his profile. And we had days & days of non-stop Beatles music on the wireless.
I never did quite get the Yoko thing, but they seemed very happy from what I could see.

I'm with you on the Yoko thing Tony.
In 1980 I bought my first house. My new neighbour was kind enough to weld me 2 new sills on my old Cortina so it would pass MOT. He wouldn't accept any payment so bought him a John Lennon album (I forget which one). Then by December the musical talent was gone.

Now that's a blast from the past.
Back in the day it was common practice to keep a car until it needed replacement sills, wings, valance, floor pans etc and then get someone to weld the bits on for you. After that you could get them sprayed to match or just brush paint them yourself.
Happy days

How, pray, does one
stumble across
that picture?! Did you accidentally Google "picture of people celebrating ending of prohibition"?
There's an episode of Frasier where he keeps getting beaten by his dad at chess.
One sleepless night, Frasier realises what his dad is doing to beat him.
"He's stumbled into the Botvinnik attack"
My then chess coach was incensed. "It's the
Panov-
Botvinnik attack and you don't
stumble
into it!"

1969: MPs vote to abolish hanging
MPs have voted by a big majority for the permanent abolition of the death penalty for murder.
A great cheer went up in the Commons as the final result was announced shortly before midnight. The voting was 343 in favour, 185 against, a majority of 158, to permanently end hanging in Britain.
The decision came at the end of a seven-and-a-half hour debate which saw the Labour Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, the Conservative leader, Edward Heath, and Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe go through the same lobby to support abolition.
Under the terms of the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 hanging was suspended for an experimental period of five years. Today's result means it is now unlikely to be brought back.
