New Sky HD Box
«

Sky are offering me a free new HD box, all I have to do is call up and they'll send it to me which is jolly decent of them.
I haven't got an HD telly though.
Will it still work with my old telly or do I just tuck it away until I update my TV?

It will work fine Ralph, and it's great to have a spare.

Beware the new (well the box they were shipping about 6 months ago) 1tb box does not have a scart lead output only HDMI output - so without buying a converter this would not work on a non HD TV.

Do you have a hard drive for recording on your current box. If not this new box will almost certainly have one.
SCART to HDMI cheap on ebay.
One thing to check is that accepting this new box may tie you into a further 12 month contract with Skye.

Never mind the box, get yourself an HDTV, its an absolute must have, especially given that you seem to watch a lot of sport.
Try ae.com they do some cracking offers. Definitely my best site for electrics.

Just for balance, HD is virtually indistinguishable from ordinary telly IMO.

Actually, no. I'm not.
I have an HD box and an HD telly but HD broadcasts look virtually the same as ordinary ones.

Are you using a scart cable or a HDMI cable? If its scart then you need to change it to HDMI, if its HDMI then im really not sure.

The back of my telly has more plugs than one of tikay's spam posts.
The DVD player has a scart, the PlayStation has a multi-pin and the Sky box has a cable with a pink end which is plugged into a port marked HDMI 1.

All seems ok. Possible nowadays the difference isn't as big as it used to be.

I've phoned up and ordered it now, supposedly arriving on Monday.
There was no mention of extending my existing contract.
Thanks for all of the advice and feedback.

The difference to me is huge. Especially when watching sport, but films, anything really. Not only is the picture substantially better - so is the sound.

Probably depends how old the HD TV is, mines about 3 or 4 years old and I can still see a big difference, when I look at the new ones in the shops they look pretty amazing.
