Thanks for all the responses so far
Should I be booking in advance for some of these things as time is limited?

no need
for the statue of liberty boats are twice hourly from memory
empire state, allow an hour to get up, book in advance or not, as the lift capacity means it can't be any quicker. the view is worth it when you get there though
museums, bus tours..no need to book

That's as likely to happen as me getting signed up by the Yankees.

Top of the rock is better than Empire State
Bus Tours are pretty good
Sushi Samba is an amazing restaurant
Pizza anywhere
Greenwhich Village is nice
The Comedy Cellar if you like comedy, there is always a small chance a famous person comes along for a five minute spot

Recommend going to Brooklyn Diner on West 57th Street for breakfast/lunch

Go every year in May for a week
Top of the Rock is best for views
Statue of Liberty worth a trip, don't bother with Ellis Island if you're short on time, by doing this you negate the need to do another boat tour
Brooklyn Bridge walk and Central Park have to be done
See a show on Broadway if that's your thing. I have seen Matilda, Chicago and Wicked.... All amazing
UN building tour is an underrated under visited gem..... Incredibly informative
Be prepared to come home half a stone heavier, and avoid the subway at rush hour. My favourite thing to do in NYC is just walk walk and walk.... Don't forget to look up!!!!

Gallaghers Steakhouse. Unbelieveable.
Fortunately I find this about 50 yds from my hotel

Cheers Keith, well worth a visit even if a little pricey.
