we are proper university challenge geeks here - We have an official scorebook and pen and scores are allocated as per the show with 10 for a starter and 5 for a bonus, playing against each other.  Usually average 60-80 points an episode, my record is 165 Cool

We need that translating into unique, got it before anyone else including other contestants, friends & family answers.

Got 15; massively helped by the sweeteners, octahedral crystals, human anatomy questions (spot the Science teacher!) and luck boxing the American state.

What about Britt Eklund btw!

Got the islets of Langerhans and Britt Ekland ones. Was disappointed to fail on the sweeteners.

Independent might be the stupidest answer ever given on University Challenge.

...and spell effervescent. When did the question setter from Bullseye join?

It was Ocober 1974. At home I was watching University Challenge on Yorkshire TV with my parents before heading off to Lancaster University the next day. I was about to start as a fresher. As usual I scored in the region between 2 and 3 ( questions were harder in those days :-) )
I arrived all bushy tailed and excited at my new home for three years. No one from my family had never been to University and it was all very strange. A large 60's campus university on the edge of the Lake District. Whether it was the first day or the next I found myself walking past a packed 'JCR' room with standing room only as University Challenge was about to start on what was probably a black and white TV. Lancaster was in Granada TV land and to my amazement the programme was a repeat of what had been shown earlier at home in Yorkshire. As Bamber Gascoigne started the questions I quickly realised that although in most cases I didn't even understand the question I could easily 'recall' the answers from the previous night. I held my counsel for a few minutes but then couldn't resist. After each question I quietly answered correctly. Repeatedly. A small circle started to look at me and I smiled, absolutely loving the immediate status of the cleverest Fresher the college had ever seen. It was hilarious and I slipped out of the room having correctly answered about 40 questions. I blanked a few to avoid suspicion. That was the academic highlight of my University education although the 3 years were amongst the happiest of my life.
Even to this day I cannot watch University Challenge without thinking of my 25 minutes of fame.

I did a similar stunt with Brain of Britain on Radio 4 many years ago, back when Robert Robinson was the Presenter.

It was broadcast one evening, & then repeated at lunchtime the next day.

I was wooing a young lady at the time, quite a refined lady actually - she was into Shakespeare & all that shite - so as the questions were being asked, I was replying to every one, one after the other. She was mightily impressed.

And then - how do these two things happen? - I transposed two answers. She never noticed when I transposed the first of course, but after the second one the game was up.

Robert Robinson, oh how I miss him. Proper hairdo, too.
