Professional life has been way more tricky, always seems to be the way as one side tips up the other side falls like a set of scales, the first fairly major setback I experienced was a business one, where one huge mistake I made a little bit ago turned to cost myself and a business partner of mine fairly heftily, we live, we learn etc but it doesn't make these things easier to stomach.

More detail IYP Uncle Dave. you don't have to be specific, just tell us exactly what happened.

Hi lil Dave I have been following ur blog for a while and am interested to continue reading about ur experiences about poker. Am a  greek cypriot and currently recite in uk so in a way we change countries!!  Excuse me if my English are not so great but a allow me to say that for such a smart guy like yourself you are a bit unfamiliar with European history. Turkey have invaded and  separated Cyprus in 1974 with the blessing of the UK and USA because as a warrant country with Greece and uk had the power to do so as an excuse to protect the turkishcypriots from the coup that was on going in the country at the time. Therefore greekcypriots have a good reason to be hotblooded as u called it don't u believe so!! The north occupied section of the island has been transformed to an illegal state that houses criminals and crooks as well as big time gamblers at the expense of families that been kicked from their houses and torn apart from Turkey thanks.

Ok Ok Smiley

I involved a new person in my businesses, against strong advice from everyone and even did a sales job convincing a long term partner to trust in this guy. Turned out he blew the whole thing up and the damage took a fair bit of rectifying, caused a bit of a strain on a long term business relationship too, it's all well and goo now though.

Like we say, mistakes happen just need to make good on them, move on and need to be better.

Hi mate, you're abso right I don't do too much on history but always keen to learn.

However I think you kinda mis-read my post

Crossing the border as a UK citizen is pretty easy, takes about 10 minutes, if you are not EU then they won't let you leave but you can come in. It's quite intimidating tbh loads of guys with guns, the history of how it became North/South is pretty interesting and REALLY recent, there is still a huge amount of bad blood over it, especially from the Greek side.

I wasn't taking any sort of sides on the subject here, as I don't know enough about it to start writing on the internet about it. From my limited experience out here I would say fairly categorically that the ill-feeling the greek-side has to the north is entirely justified - I've played in casinos where greeks refuse to play on tables with turks etc. I have spoken with greek-cypriot guys who own land in the north and essentially just had a turkish guy move in and take it whilst he was shipped off to the south entirely un-compensated. I really do not understand fully the politics of the reasons of the occupation so I don't know how to comment further. I find it an interesting topic though.

Do you know why the UK decided to back a turkish occupation here?

I'm fairly sure they backed it so they could have a good position to spy on the Middle East. Or something like that. Worked with Greek guys who were very passionate about it. I ate in a few kebab shops too that were owned by Greeks.

Anyway, hi dave. A diary isn't a diary without some mention of nandos. What is your preferred order at nandos?

On a scale of 10-10, with 10 being the greatest, and 10 being the greatest, how great is middy?

Looking forward to the diary x

Cyprus was under UK ruling till 1955, then fights broke out between locals and UK colony to support the union off the island and Greece mainland. Cyprus became independent in 1960 with new constitution and with mix government  with a Cypriot president and Turkish vice, something that did not work according to plan. Greece England and Turkey were guaranty countries and were responsible for the safety of the peopl of the island. When in 1974 we had a coup to overturn the government turkey as one of the above countries found the excuse to send troops with the UK USA and NATO blessing and now occupy about 40% off the island. Now as to why UK back the above action, I believe that was the UK policy off divide and rule that prevailed !! Now the UK has two military bases on the island that serve there purpose off controlling Middle East . Anyway did not want these to turn into a political debate but sometimes is good to know some facts. Looking forward to your postsπŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Hi Dave,

as a fellow Dave I'd be interested to hear how you feel about Bergeroo's Dave classification.

Also, have you noticed how there's almost always one ther Dave on every table you play on?

Don't leave the gambling and debauchery stories to answer these btw.

New diary = Tal Quick-fire Questions

1. Go to your generic mp3 player. Press shuffle five times. What comes up? (Be honest, please. Only cheating yourself)

2. You can make one change the standard deck of cards (be this appearance, adding a suit, adding a card value, getting rid of a card, changing the shape, etc). What is it?

3. Jacket potato filling of choice?

4. I have 10 grand to blow in vegas and leave tomorrow. What does LDT (Lil Dave Tours) suggest?

5. Shakespeare, Jonson or Marlowe?

The bit about the UK backing the invasion just isn't correct.  The UN and the UK opposed the occupation and still do.  There are UN resolutions from the time that were passed unanimously.  Northern Cyprus is not recognised by and other Country other than Turkey AFAIK.

and lol at the UK controlling the Middle East.  Not sure anybody is controlling big chunks of the Middle East, let alone us.

I thought it was for the purpose of easily spying on the Middle East, rather than controlling.

I thought it was for the purpose of easily spying on the Middle East, rather than controlling.

Turkey, from their perspective, invaded to protect the Turkish Cypriots after a long period of tension and in the relatively immediate aftermath of a Greek Military coup.

It wasn't much to do with support or backing from the US or the UK who happily trade arms and other things with both Greece & Turkey. We, somewhat standardly, in the post war period helped with resolutions denouncing the invasion but didn't actually involve ourselves militarily in ejecting the Turkish forces.

Cyprus is certainly a strategic base for us but it never really mattered whether Turks or Greeks were in the ascendency as long as we had bases there and things were relatively stable
