My favourite band over the last couple of years or so are The Airborne Toxic Event.  Immensely talented group of musicians, as I've always been a sucker for bands incorporating string sections into their music.

All 5 of their albums are excellent, and they've varied the style of each so you never quite know what to expect from each release.  Brilliant live band too.

"All I Ever Wanted" - guitars and string quartet, a real 'full sound'

"California" - mellower sound, more synths and drum machines

"A Certain Type Of Girl" - from their acoustic album.  Reminds me of listening to my Dad's country albums when I was a child.

"Goodbye Horses" - live cover of Q Lazzarus' song (remember the original from Silence of the Lambs?)

I could be here for days...

Voodoo Vegas - good old school rock. Kinda like Aerosmith etc. Really good, and sound just as good live.

Revoker - Heavy. Very heavy. Yet very very good. Especially considering their handicap, they're Welsh.

Hayseed Dixie - These guys are interesting. And when I say interesting, I mean interesting. They invented their own style, called Rockgrass. To sum it up, they play mainly covers (and some of their own stuff) of heavy metal songs. Hillbilly style.

Leo Moracchioli - This guy owns his own studio, and takes famous pop songs, transposes them and turns them into metal hits, playing all instruments involved (and singing) alone. Some of them are ok at best but some sound amazing, as shown below. Personal recommendations here include the one below, plus Moves Like Jagger, Let it Go and Money Money Money.

Might be a good place to ask:

What are some good Country and Western bands? I worked in America for a summer a few years back and heard a few country songs (such as by the Zak Brown Band) and always meant to do a bit of research into groups to listen to.

Hayseed Dixie. Mighty Wah. Great shouts.

Both great shouts. Hayseed Dixie were on Moyles's show, possibly when he was doing Saturday afternoons. Their covers of Roses, Centrefold and Omen are just glorious.

At last, sanity.

I knew if I read this thread often enough, there would eventually be a band worth watching. That is a wonderful track, too, & No Doubt (ooh, Gwen) covered it as well.

Neutral Milk Hotel - they recorded one of the most weird and wonderful albums ever made with "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea".

It's often found somewhere in the minor places when the NME or similar do a greatest albums list, so I'd expect a few on here to have heard of them, but they're not exactly mainstream.

I discovered them when they were on a long-term hiatus with a likelihood that I'd never get to see them play live.  Then they re-formed and toured a couple of years ago, and were well worth the wait.

Found a fellow fan on 2+2 a few years ago who suggested that I'd probably also like The Decemberists.  The Rake's Song is a live favourite - check out the lyrics of this little ditty (helpfully provided on screen by the poster of this on YouTube).

a lot to catch up on.

What was instrument was the fella in the yellow playing there Curtis? Inspite of the subject matter, I enjoyed the Decemberists track - reminded me of the Pixies for some reason.

reminded me of Gigantic straight away.  But it doesn't have that trademark quiet quiet loud pixes sound.  Is just quiet quiet quiet.  Pixies perfected that sound on Smells Like Teen Spirit

Tighty missed a golden opportunity to play one of the best videos ever.

The song and video were inspired by a book that was big when I was young.  Sure some gamblers have been inspired by it too.

Interesting to read the comparisons to the Pixies, who are one of my favourite bands.  I've never associated them with The Decemberists' sound at all, but now that it's been pointed out it seems quite obvious (from that track at least) now.
