In the TV series Narcos they have a farmer who dug up a crate of his money and turned it in to some of Escabar's men out of fear.

Escobar had to bury his money because he was not able to launder it through the banking system.  It has been estimated he lost $2 Billion/year due to cash being destroyed by weather, rodents, insects, etc.

I had no idea how much money or how powerful Escobar was, he was really a super villain.
