Mrs Red's burning question.
«
on:

Mrs Red downloaded Windows 10, (because it was free) and now she's discovered that it has no DVD burner.
By picking the odd repeatable word from the torrent of profanity, I gather they want to charge her a fee to install one.
Advice or ear plugs appreciated.

I'd be surprised if MS want to charge for burning software, it's usually included.
Does this help?

It might do Graham, if I can get her to stop swearing long enough to read it.

Thanks Graham.
I have no windows dvd handling software of any kind and can't download it. There is an app that I could pay for.

Cheeky buggers removing it!
This free one seems to have good reviews -

There are free versions available, just be careful what links you click.

Thanks Graham and Ironside, I have spent the whole of yesterday (I kid you not)! trying to make copies of two home videos with my laptop. I thought I had copied them with the VLC app but all it did was 'stream' them into my video file, then they didn't look right 'cos when I 'clicked' them they wouldn't play. I then went through the process of what I thought was burning them onto a disc, then tried to play the DVD only for my laptop to tell me that there was nothing on it! You can clearly see a demarcation (if that's the word) of something on the disc itself and, on looking at the properties of the disc it says it has got so much used, I don't know......
Anyway, got Tom to get an old laptop out which is running Windows XP which I know is now unsupported but, has Media Player, NTI CD&DVD Maker and Cyberlink Power Producer.
Spent hours ripping and supposedly burning onto five discs luckily re writable, so no waste...only to get to the same problem, it's on there but, cant' be read by my own laptop, this old one and Tom's so.......
I'm going to try the link you gave me Graham and have another go! I shall not be beaten!!! LOL
Any ideas anyone? Anything at all would be much appreciated....
All the best

I had same problem when I tried to make a DVDs on Windows 8 lots of free programs out there but all added watermark to the DVDs some right in centre of screen. Windows 7 movie maker was ideal.
Will have a scout around see if I can spot one for you today

I think we just have to accept that some things aren't going to be free forever. We've been teased with so much great stuff for so long that we're now completely dependant and now's the time they're going to make us pay. For some reason though we seem to think they owe us this stuff for free.
I really wonder how long it'll be before we have to pay for google earth? Who could possibly cope without that? How they manage to do it for free is completely beyond me.
As for burning your discs, if it's something you do regularly then just stump up the cash for a decent program. You can get them for between £30 and £90 depending on functionality required.

I don't think we necessarily expect it for free, but it's pretty mean to have given it for free for years and then take it away without telling us and removing it during a major update that we weren't really that fussed about having in the first place.

96% of google's income comes from advertising. You do get advertising targeted based on what you do on the internet - but google doesn't sell the data to the advertisers, they use it once they've got the adverts.
In a way they're selling your personal information - but only really indirectly. Unless you've seen evidence to the contrary?
EDIT: at work we manage data for companies that often want to buy peoples personal information so that they can sell them stuff - if google are directly selling it, they're not advertising it very well
